That's impossible as far as I know. With Windows 2000 and XP you can press F6 and install the SATA controller drivers and then continue to install the OS.

With Windows 98 there is no support for installing on a SATA hard drive. The Windows 98 boot disk has generic drivers for SCSI controllers and CD/DVD-ROM drives, but it does not have any drivers for SATA.

Thus, you are out of luck. I really wanted to install Windows 98SE on my SATA hard drive too, but I've been told it isn't possible.

Perhaps there is a way to slipstream SATA drivers into a Windows 98SE CD?

    Good luck.

SOURCE: Windows 2000 advanced Server does not support Seagate 250 GB Hard Drive.

I am inclined to think that this would be a problem with the jumper settings limiting the size of the drive.
I can't offer anything more than that, sorry. Hope it will help a bit.

Dear,

You have to make IDE drive as slave. For this put the jumper to slave in IDE drive. Possibility of CMOS battery is rare, but you can confirm it by checking your system time in BIOS. If system time is ok then there is no problem in CMOS battery and you need not to replace it.

How cAN I INSTALL WINDOW 98 OVER WINDOWS XP IN THE NTFS FILE SYSTEM

For that first you need to delete that ntfs patition becasue win98 disk not supports ntfs.
For deete partiotion you can use dm tool or winxp bootable disk then delete NTFs partition then boot computer with win98 disk thats it.

The best you can do is buy a small cable (+/-€ 10) IDE-USB. This cable lets you connect your IDE drive on a pc using USB.

HARD DRIVE DOESN'T READ ON WINDOWS 98

Hi,

Two possible reasons:
1. Since the Win98 PC hasn't been used for some time, it can be assumed that somehow the CMOS/BIOS has reverted to default values including its recognition of what HD is installed (or in this case failure to recognize the HD). What needs to be done is the let the PC detect what HD is installed. To do this, on most PCs you need to press "Del" key on boot up (when prompted by a bottom screen display of "Press Del to change BIOS values".... or something like that. Somewhere, there should be an option to manually detect the HD, save setting exit, reboot.
2. If the above does not detect the HD and boot, it may be that the HD has suffered physical/hardware fault such as stuck spindle motor or something else. In some instances, it maybe the IDE cable or even the 4-wire power connector.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Win98se i did it ... HERE'S HOW

OK, I bought this Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Essential Edition too, and could not get it to work with Windows 98 SE.

I followed the above instructions, but my version of windows was missing even the drivers suggested above! UGH!

HOWEVER, I found ANOTHER SOLUTION. I installed USB 2.0 drivers for mass storage and the the MY BOOK icon popped up on my Windows 98 SE machine. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Here are the drivers from this british webpage:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php

Good luck to all you frustrated folks scooping your info off Windows 98 machines!
