What a waste of my time and money ... this is a technical support site correct? Please don't tell me that the advise which I'm getting is from want-to-be's!

butoxige didn't have much to say that the others --NON-TECHNICIANS-- OFFERED. I would like it if a real television techical support person female/male could help me out with this problem ... so that when I do call a repair person I will have at least sonething to being to the table and hopefully not get sent to the cleaners!
    Thanks in advance.

kagebunshin Thanks for the advise ... I was afraid that a new set was in the works. Better to put the money to something new and with a warranty.

Are you sure that there is no button stuck on your TV? Kindly check it.

Well, it is probably the controller circuitry. Probably an IC chip gone south or the voltage regulator that is feeding it. Some testing by a tech who knows what he is doing is necessary to check what has failed. Repair could be upwards of $100. Most tv shops will not take in a set this old because support is no longer available for them. If it turns out to be a voltage regulator or power supply problem it can be repaired with generic parts, but if the controller IC has gone bad it may be impossible to find a replacement chip.

As a rule, any tv of this size over 9 years of age is not worthy of repair; better to put the money towards a new set.

Other than what melnavz said, the only other thing that comes to mind is the tv is getting interference from another source (this is highly unlikely) but its a suggestion. My advice is either to call GE and see if they will service the tv or call a repair guy, get him to look at it and give you an estimate. The other people have pretty much pointed out any other problems that it might be.

Take out the batteries of all the remotes that are able to change the channel and put a piece of duct tape over the infared reciever and if it still does it, it is most likely defective.

if that doesn't work try disconnected the front buttons of my set. Pop off the speaker cover and
note which color wires come off the buttons and then take off the lower
back and you can see where it connects to a board. Generally the far
right connection but trace the wires. After doing that my channels quit
cycling and everything but the front buttons work.

I am a technician.
Remove batteries from remote, to see if the problem is the remote. In that case I can find a replacement remote.

If you have channels changing on their own, then it is a fauty switch, probably a short or a stuck button, if your model has buttons. Otherwise is a faulty control board.

Post exact model if you want more technical support.

Try unplugging the set for about 8 hours, press and hold power button for 3 seconds, wait 1/2 hour more, plug back in and see if the tv has reset itself.

LG 32 inch lcd tv. When you turn it on, the screen (no picture) looks like a shattered window. The set is not hooked up to cable, channels aren't set yet. I just bought the tv for my son.

You need to hook this set up to viewable source to verify if there is a defect.

Then select the source, and check for problems, then.

Is the set used or new?

I have no picture or sound when iturn t.v.on iunplugedand let set about 10 minutes and have same problem

Hi,

Most current designs of TVs would need a couple of hours unplugged before it would reset itself to default settings. There are some instances that overnight would be better.

If this proves to be not corrective, please post back with the brand and model of your TV.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up, details as requested or should you need additional information. It would also be of help if you can post any indicators such as blinking lights (LEDs) colors, their blinking sequence and anything else out of the ordinary.

Good luck and kind regards.

I have lost the manuel and remote for my GE49GW948

Best thing to do is to buy a universal remote - preferably RCA/GE brand since it will work without programming.
You should also be able to get to the autoprogram function of the TV by using the front panel buttons.

Channel changing

You can obtian the user manual at http://www.thomsonnetwork.com/EN/Public. It is likely that during intital set up you selected iether VCR or cable box. If so unplug the tv for about 5 minutes. Whenit is turned on again you will get the intial setup screen. Select "nl" when asked if you have a VCR or cable box.
