Sony KDF-42WE655 Power Supply shot after 4 years

I am told the power supply needs to be replaced on my TV for $500.00. This after the optical block had to be replaced. Is this a common Sony problem?
Might be my last Sony Purchase

Last night it went off for no reason. When I turned it back on the green power light flashed 4 times then it flashed red 3 times.

I called Sony and they gave me an authorized repairman. He came out and the red light flashed 6 times instead of 3.

They said that usually mans the thermal fuse and possibly the fan. If that was the problem parts were quoted at $100.00, labor $295.00. I paid $85.00 for the pick up and delivery already.

They called and said the power supply was bad and had to be replaced. Part $150.00, labor again $295.00.

Any info you can provide is helpful.

    Thank you

Lamp door was not warped and has never been open. I did look at it.

It is not a fan but a power supply he wants to replace.

    I am dubious also

I had the optical block replaced about 6 months ago. Free thanks to my circuit city plan but now I have the same issue. For no reason the red LED blinks and keeps blinking indicating something is wrong again. This is the worst POS Tv I have ever owned!! I'll let you all know what the repair is this time once I get the right people to come out. CC sends the ticket to a company that doesn't service my area, then I call and get it sent to the local company. Last repair if I had paid would ahve been $1,100.00!!!

Your information is puzzling. The original 3 flash code means that the lamp door was not completely closed. The following 6 flash is likely a bad thermal fuse. But first, did you notice if the lamp door was warped or melted in any way? This is very important.

I have repaired many of this model and have yet to replace a power supply. Can you tell me the symptoms? What was the original reason that you called for service?

Oh and my red LED is blinking 10 times. Not sure is that means something but it should.

the power supply unit cost about $175-$180 /so he's charging about $300-$320 for labor

Ok I read this wrong. They didn't do the thermal fuse and fan? They just said they thought that was it. I'm wondering if they are talking about the main power supply. a 6 flash CAN mean a power supply failure, either a G1 or G2 failure. What probably happened is that they checked the thermal fuse and found it OK (the thermal fuse is the most common cause of a 6 flash failure), so then they checked the power supply. You've already had the optical block replaced (I assume that was under warranty) so the TV should be in pretty good shape once you get done. This is a tough call; I understand your position about feeling like you are throwing good money after bad. All I can tel you this is a good TV and it's unusual for the power supply to fail, but not out of the question.

Also, FYI, it would help to know which fan the repairman wants to replace. I'm getting a bad feeling about the quote they gave you. Please answer the question about the lamp door first.

Sony TV KDF-E42A10 Projection TV Standby light flashes 4 times. TV turns on for 5 seconds and turns off with standby light flashing 4 times. TV will not stay on.

Hello,

Your power supply board is not yet dead, you know basic electronics' and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors. These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable, and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.

Hope this helpout in solving the problem......

My sony television is developing an increasing number of blue dots across the screen. It is a Sony LCD model # KDF-42WE665 I have already reaplaced a bulb to the tune of $350.00 about 2 years ago and now...

This blue dots problem is due to defective blue lcd and related uv filters/ polarizers in optic block (light engine) and optic block will be replace to fis that issue.
It would be costly fix and an experienced tech is needed to do the job. You can expect $1000 repair cost.
Thanks.

Can't poweup after power outerage

Either the fuse has blown or the power supply is faulty and needs to be replaced. You can test with a voltmeter where the power supply meets main control board for power. The fuse should be next to power supply. It will be glass tube fuse and should have a thin internal wire running all the way across the fuse.

KDF-60XS955 Blue dots all over screen. Lower left corner of screen has a small blue cone shape. Will a new bulb fix this? If yes how do I replace the bulb?

It is problem of light engine (optical block) in TV and Lamp replacement does not solve it.
TV needs replacement of light engine, that is costly part.
