Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

1 Answer

I can't view certain websites

Just a few days ago, all of a sudden I could not view cerain websites. I get the message: The website could not be found. I contacted the website owner and they have said that it loads just fine on their end. I can go to, but when I try to search for anything, that error page comes up. I have tried so many things, I've run out of ideas. I've reset the default settings on internet options, upgraded to IE 8, changed the MTU settings, tried to do the "repair LAN" and it says it cannot clear the cache, tried to clear the cache manually, etc. etc. Any ideas?

I installed spybot, ran it, rebooted my computer, and ran it again. The website still doesn't work. I have AVG. Thanks for your suggestion, though. I really don't know what it could possibly be.

  • jouwhoo Oct 22, 2008

It says "Ping request could not find the host"

  • jouwhoo Oct 22, 2008

I guess I did it wrong. Here's what came up:

  • jouwhoo Oct 22, 2008

If it helps, I logged onto my husband's user account on our computer and typed in the website. It came up just fine. Then when I clicked on "logon" on the website, the error message came up again. Any ideas?

  • jouwhoo Oct 23, 2008

Yes, I have files in my documents folder.

  • jouwhoo Oct 23, 2008

I can do that. What next?

  • jouwhoo Oct 24, 2008

Well, I took your advice and moved all my files into a new folder and then deleted all of my documents. Then I went to the new folder and there was nothing there. I went to my recycle bin to restore them, and only the pictures and music were there. All of my files are gone. I tried to find them on my computer and they are completely gone. Do you have any way to bring them back?

  • jouwhoo Oct 24, 2008

I did a search and nothing came up. The reason I deleted them from My Documents is because when I "moved" them to the other folder, they were still there and I saw "My Documents" in the new folder. So I thought that I had just copied them. I should have been smart enough to make a backup copy and to look to make sure they were in the new folder before deleting them. I know better than that, but I didn't do it. I've just been beating myself up about it. I'm not so upset for the fact that I lost some files, as much as I am upset at myself for doing that. I was smart enough, however, to do a backup on my files a few months ago, so the only files I lost were the most current ones. I tried doing system restore and it didn't recover the files.

    So, what now?

Thanks for all your help, by the way :)

  • jouwhoo Oct 29, 2008

I still cannot view the webpage.

  • jouwhoo Oct 29, 2008

Well, it would be nice to recover them, but I don't think I'll be able to.

  • jouwhoo Oct 30, 2008

Ok, I ran the program and it brought some of the documents back, but not all of them. It actually found files that were nearly 10 years old, but the most recent ones that were deleted, it only found some. I ran a deep scan. Thank you for that program. Had I known there was such a program out there, it would have saved me a lot of heartache in the past.

So now I am ready to continue trying to fix my computer so that the websites will come up.

  • jouwhoo Oct 30, 2008

No, I don't feel comfortable with anyone accessing my computer. Can you just show me step-by-step what to do?

  • jouwhoo Nov 05, 2008

It was not my computer that was the problem. It was the website. The website was banning my isp address so that I could not view the website. After creating a new account with them, I was able to view the website with no problem. But if I tried to log on with my old account, I could no longer view the website. Thanks for all your help anyway. I still learned a lot.

  • jouwhoo Nov 07, 2008

I had posted the solution a few days ago, but for some reason it didn't get posted. The problem was not in my computer, it was the website. The website banned my isp address from accessing it. Once I registered as a different user, I could access the site with no problem. I had no idea websites could do this.

  • jrivello Nov 13, 2008

All of a sudden... there are two websites that I am not able to view. I have cleared my cache, history, etc... still can't access. I can bring the site up on the other 2 computers in my house, but not the one. Why is the one computer blocking these sites???

Sounds like you have a Malware infection.
I suggest that you go to download and install spybot.  Then run it.
Reboot the Pc and then update and run it again.  Keep doing this until it finds no issues.
Test to see if you can get to the website.  Do you have any other PC’s you could test from your location?  It could be that you are suffering from DNS poisoning, but I would rule out spyware 1st.

Do you have a virus checker?  if not then try

I think that we should start by rebuilding your user profile.

Do you have any documents/pictures/music in the my documents folder?

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 23, 2008

I would also suggest downloading and running this will clear out your temp folders.  Then test again.

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 23, 2008

I think that we need to replace your profile, now in order to do this we will need to move all your documents to a new location.

Create a directory in the root of C: called Documents and move all your documents there.

Can you do that or would you like me to write some instructions for you?

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 24, 2008

Oh dear. I did not actually say delete the documents, because there would not have been any there to delete had they been moved. But let’s see what we can do.

If they are not in the recycle bin there are only a few conclusions we can draw. Either they have been deleted in a secure way, in which case there is nothing we can do, or they have been moved, but to a different location from the one that you expect. The other alternative is that the wastebasket has been emptied.

The 1st thing to do is to a search on the pc for anything ending in “.doc” or “.xls”. This will locate the documents if they exist. If this does not find any documents we can discuss some of the file recovery utilities that are available.

What is important at this stage is that e make as few changes as possible to the machine to ensure we do not overwrite any data that can be recovered.

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 29, 2008

OK. We have to decide where we are going before we proceed. We can attempt to recover the missing docs, or if you are happy that you have a back up of what you need we can look at rebuilding your profile.

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 29, 2008

We could try, but you will need some data recovery tools. is such a tool. I have just tested it and it seems ok. The only danger is that installing it could overwrite something (when beeing installed), but it is the only thing we can do. If you have 2 disks you couls install it on the second, but I do not think that you do. Just install this and runa a scan. it it does not find the docs run a deep scan.

Could you please do the following.

    type cmd documents*

This should put you in the "documents and settings" folder

then send me a copy of the contents of the dir.txt file that is created.  Copy it into the comments here.

Would you feel comfortable with me remote contolling your PC?

    Type  "dir > dir.txt"

    type "notepad dir.txt"
this will open notepad with dir.txt in it

I take it that you are logged on as Diana.

Please log on to the pc as either Administrator or Martin (if he is an administrator) and RENAME the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Diana    to C:\Documents and Settings\DianaOld

Then log out and log back in as you.  Then see if you can get to your web site.  This will have the effect of resetting all your entire profile, so If you use outlook or any other programs with settings in you will have to reset them.  We could use the settings wizzard to save all your settings, but this could take the problem with it.  Do you have any settings saved or use outlook/outlook express/thunderbird or any other such program?

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 30, 2008

OK.  So we will need to save your settings and emails.  Give me 2 mins.

  • Cosma Papouis
    Cosma Papouis Oct 30, 2008

    Login as yourself

    All programs
    System tools
    File and settings transfer wizzard
    Old computer
    type c:\settings\
    select yes
    select "Both files and settings"
    Let the wizard compleate

    Log out
    Login as Martin or Administrator
Rename The Diana folder to DianaOld

    Log out

    Logback in as Diana

Check to see if the website works.

If it does then Rerun the settings wizzard
this time select "new computer" and navigate to c:\settings"

    it will restore your settings

Reboot the computer and test the web site again

I am sorry to say that I need to get my hands on it or you need to refer to a local repairer.

I understand why you do not want me to remote control it but diagnosing this further will be very hard otherwise.

To return the machine to the original status.  login as Martin.  Rename Diana to Diana1 and Rename Dianaold to Diana.  log off and all will be as it was.

    Sorry :(

The internet said that they can not bring up your web page.

Internet Explore Cannot Display the Webpage
As you browse the Web with Internet Explorer, you may occasionally encounter an error message about the browser being unable to display the requested Web page.
If your browser is unable to display a page, the issue lies somewhere along the path from your computer to the remote website. In some cases, you can resolve the issue by troubleshooting your computer or Internet connection. Internet Connection Issue
If Internet Explorer is unable to display any pages at all, see if you are able to browse the Web on another computer.
If none of the computers in your home can browse, the problem is related to your Internet connection.
In some cases, you can resolve an Internet connection issue by unplugging the power connections for your broadband modem and router temporarily.
If you are still unable to browse, contact your Internet service provider for further assistance.

Malicious Software
If you are unable to browse the Web on your computer but can browse on other computers, the computer itself has an issue. In some cases, this can mean that your computer is infected with malicious software.
Download an anti-virus program on another computer and run it on the affected computer to troubleshoot the issue.

User Error If you receive an error in Internet Explorer when you attempt to browse to a single website, but other websites work, check to make sure that you are entering the address of the website correctly.
By default, Internet Explorer searches the Web for a close result if the address you entered is not associated with an actual website. If you have disabled this feature and enter a website address incorrectly, Internet Explorer displays an error message.

Remote Website Issue

If you are unable to browse to a single website and are certain that you have entered the website address correctly, it is likely that the website itself has a problem.
You can wait and attempt to view the website again later, or search for the website on Google or another search engine and click the "Cached" link to view a recent cached copy of the website.

My office blocks facebook & youtube

When navigating the Web through a network with filtering software or hardware established, you will find yourself unable to access a variety of websites. Generally, Internet users faced with these restrictions use a proxy site to bypass the blocks on their networks and access restricted websites. However, this is not the only viable way to approach this situation. If you want to unblock websites on your network without using a proxy, you may use a virtual private network (VPN), which works as a gateway.

1.Browse to the VPNGates website to unblock restricted websites on your network without the need for a proxy. The server provided by VPNGates reflects an unrelated IP address to ensure your security while you browse the Web anonymously with uncensored and unrestricted access to all websites. Additional features include unlimited bandwidth, security in unsecured locations like cafes and universities as well as online TV and instant messaging access. VPNGates offers users monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual account choices. To view the pricing or set up an account, scroll down to the middle of the VPNGates website (see Resources).

2.Operate the RoadWarriorVPN service on your operating system to unblock websites through its virtual private network. This VPN server includes secured, encrypted Internet access as well as unlimited bandwidth. RoadWarriorVPN offers account options for one month, six months or one year. The RoadWarriorVPN accounts include a 24-hour refund policy, so if for any reason you aren't 100 percent satisfied, you may request a refund during cancellation through the "Self Service" tab at the top, left corner of the page (see Resources).

3.Navigate to the StrongVPN website and use its virtual private network as a gateway to unblock any restricted content on your network. Strong VPN provides a neutral IP address that enables anonymous and unrestricted web browsing privileges to all websites. Additional features include fast network connection, no bandwidth charges and live technical quality support 24 hours a day every day of the week. StrongVPN offers monthly or yearly accounts as well as yearly specials (see Resources).

I hope you find it very helpful. Thanks
