Question about Grundig S350 AM/FM/SW Radio

1 Answer

Intermittent volume level

This is our second Grundig s350; the first one just died. This second one (Radio Shack) worked well for a year, then the volume became sporadic. It will start out low, even when the volume is turned way up, then the volume cranks up for seconds, then back to inaudible. It does not appear to be dependent on power source (appropriate adapter or fully charged batteries). I'd love to get it fixed, hate to scrap another one! Any suggestions on fixing it? Or a comparable, more reliable replacement?

Thanks, I did wind up sending it to Eton (after locating this site via a Google search). Their Tech Support was great, responding that day, got a return authorization number and received a new radio within a couple of weeks. This one is working fine, though I never did find out exactly what the problem was on the one I returned.

Radio Shack does provide a volume control cleaner that you could gently spray to clean the contacts, but you may simply have a defective knob. (The first S350DL I bought had a defective volume control.) Don't hesitate to call Eton Customer Service either.

I hate to say this, but I've become a little wary of buying radios at Radio Shack. I have a suspicion that occasionaly radios that are returned get "recycled" back into stock rather than sent back to the manufacturer. I had to return 2 radios directly to Eton / Grundig after getting back to back defectives at RS.

The Grundig S350 (DL) runs on one of three power sources: electrical outlet, DD batteries, and AA batteries. There is a switch in the battery compartment that permits to change battery type. I do not know how different the S350 and the S350 DL are, but you should try to find out if it works with any of the two battery types before having it serviced. Clean all contacts of any acid corrosion. Check the manual to see if you have to specify the battery type in the setup too.

I have used my Grundig S350 radio almost daily, for the past 6-7 years. I went on vacation for 10 days. When I returned home, I turned on the power, lights light up, etc., but no sound...no matter how...

Hi
Its microcomputer chip may have hanged. Just make a reset ans see whether it helps you. It must help you, i"m sure. To reset it;

S350 incorporates with micro computer chip (the component that

controls how the radio operates). If the radio has been subjected to

abnormal environmental conditions, the micro computer chip may
hang up and the following symptoms may appear

The display shows nothing and the radio cannot be turned on by
pressing POWER & SLEEP button.

The display shows random characters or does not work properly

although the radio can receive stations normally.

In these cases, you might need to reset the radio. To reset the

S350, unplug the external adaptor (if one is being used) and

remove the batteries from the battery compartment. Insert a

pointed object, such as straightened paper clip, into the RESET hole

on the right, front side of the radio and gently press and release the

button inside the hole. Then plug in the AC adaptor or reinstall the
batteries
OK.

I purchased the S350 for work. The company I work for just installed new fluorescent lights in the room that the radio plays. the problem is that while on the ac adapter. the radio pick up interference. ...

The speakers are to large for the Grundig to handle and should be removed. The fluorescent lights have a built in transformer that can cause problems when an AC adapter is used in a radio, but this is the case if one or more fixures have a flaw generating line noise which the radio would pick up. There are three suggestions you can try, relocate the radio in an attempt to correct the problem, purchase a noise filter from Radio Shack, or try and isolate the fixture that is the issue.

The picture shows an S350 -- if your model looks like that but with a different designation this fix may still work:
Look above the gain knob (bottom right) and then above the Tuning fast -- slow lettering. You should see a reset hole. Use a paper clip to reset the radio.

Grundig S350 not powering on

Is there any easy self-fix that can be done to get the radio working again?

Nope. I'll bet you have some corrosion inside the switch itself.
Unless you can disassemble that you will have to send it in. If the switch had metal contacts, you could try just a tiny shot of cleaner in the switch, then work it off and on.

If you are able to get to the switchs' contacts, you can short those and see if the radio powers up. Just make sure that you have the right connections.

Bad idea bout wpraying it down with cleaner. If that suff gets in the coild or other parts like the tiny tuning capacitor, it can melt together inside, or at least cause it to be off frequency.
Good luck,

It sounds like a component on the circuit board is heating up. Open the radio up and check if anything is overheating, if so replace the defective part.

Grundig S350 digital display

The radio is analog with a digital display. Mine displays off all the time, you can try turning the other switches on it just slightly. Just move them a tiny amount. This seems to correct my problems. Heat is also another factor with these things, they drift all over the place.
