Panasonic DMR-EX95 - Screen goes blank

Panasonic DMR-EX95 - 250gb Hard Drive DVD Recorder &
VCR Combination - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview - Silver
Now and again I get a blank screen on the TV when using this DVD combi and the code U80 comes on the display. I have looked up the codes in the instruction book but this code is not there. The electric power wire to the DVD is a very loose fitting I am wondering if this is the problem?
Could you please tell me what this code U80 means.
I look forward to your reply.
Kind regards
Geraldine Caruana

Panasonic DMR-EX95VEBS Recorder & VCR Comibination

This DVD Combi recorder has not gone into a blank screen, code U80, since I have placed a small box under the power line that enters into the recorder to support it. This was very loose and obviously was not connecting the electricity supply at all times, this resulted in U80 displayed and a blank green or sometimes purple screen. I hope this will help anybody else that has this code showing and thinks the recorder is going terribly wrong.

This happens to mine regularly also, but I have checked all my connections which seem fine.

Hello this only happens to mine when I am watching freeview...yet it never used to and I have had it at least a year! Also when something is set to record the screen never goes blank when watching it back it's only when I am just watching digital (freeview) ..And more than once an hour...how can this be normal (the screen normally goes grey)? My TV does it alsoI get a flat colour and you have to turn the tv off and on again and it's possibly the most annoying thing ever..I mean if it's my aerial connection why was it never doing it before?

SOURCE: my dvd recorder DMR-EZ45VEBS COME

I get this too, and a little research brought me lots of anecdotes but nothing concrete, but here's was I deduce from the stories...

The unit has an auto-scan feature that periodically checks for new services or channels. Sometimes when it adds one it encounters and error and hangs showing U80. When you're recording it seems the auto-scan doesn't interrupt, so your program will complete. I've had several failures of timed recordings when the unit has stalled before recording was due to start.

Try switching the auto-scan off...

Functions > Others > Display > New service message

Hoepfully that will resolve it, though you will need to manually scan for new services periodically to make sure you don't miss out. At least you'll be on hand if it fails so it won't sit showing U80 for hours!

SOURCE: u80 error code on panasonic dmr-ex75. what is it?

U80 indicates either that poor quality or
damaged discs are being used or that the laser is failing. It is a
self-diagnostic fault code, possibly requiring attention by a qualified
engineer. This is not an inherent fault with the product but a guide for
the engineer to know where, within the product, he should seek the cause of
the problem.

if it uses a SATA hdd it maybe the drive is faulty & is now not booting at all. most will take a normal pc SATA hdd but check what the max size your unit can take as they have there own format & you may make the drive un-usable in a pc again. i would say get a second hand 160 - 250GB drive and try it out. as they are cheap 2nd hand.

No VCR required - A VCR is a video cassette recorder, which requires a video cassette in order to record source material. A DVD recorder, requires DVD discs and this model in particular has a built in hard drive so you don't even need discs either, unless you plan to share recordings with others. All you need is a 'feed' / 'source' from an external aerial like Cable or Sky etc.
Does that help?

Yes, that's mostly what I use mine for. You actually copy your VHS to the Hard Drive, then copy from your hard drive to your blank DVD. I'm about 1/3 of my way through reformatting my VHS library (800+ tapes.)

If your cable is connected with just a scart lead (in AV2) you just put the recorder onto the AV2 channel. You need to connect the cable decoder to the recorder via an arial lead to be able to tune it in but there is no need just use the AV channel.
