Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
Our 2 year-old GE Stainless Spacesaver Microwave is now making a loud noise when it is turned on, and food is not heating in it. It also has a slightly burned plastic/electrical smell when we turn it on. Questions- we had plugged an electric heater into an outlet on the same breaker as the microwave and it flipped the breaker twice while the microwave was in use. Could that have damaged it? If so, do you think the magnetron was damaged by the description? Do you think it is worth investing at least $100 is diagnostics to see if we can repair it?
A microwave should always be on its own breaker to prevent the breaker's being tripped. If that happens too often it can wear out the breaker and/or the outlet. But that won't damage your magnetron.
I would say one of three parts has failed, the high voltage rectifier diode, the magnetron, or the high voltage transformer.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If it's the magnetron, and it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.
Some manufacturers will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. If nothing else, you can save about $75 by taking it to the shop yourself.
If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.
