Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

1 Answer

Read only documents

I'm opening word docs , on Vista platform, and they(folders and documents) are all checked read only. I uncheck the read only tab and click apply...the system processes the request...but the folder(s) all remain read only.

What can I do to gain access to these documents to edit them?

All were excellent suggestions!!! Unfortunately everything remains "read only" immediately after unchecking and reopening any filesor folders.

    Perhaps somekind of virus????

Any folders and documents under a read only folder will inherit the permissions from the parent directory.

Try copying a few files out of where ever you are saving them to and correct the permissions on a totally different spot on your directory stucture.

Also make sure that administrators and everyone are in the permissions with all the permissions checked boxed.

Make sure the account you are signed into are part of the administrators group and is not a limited rights user.

This is not normal and yes it could be a virus. Make sure your virus definitions are up to date and do a full system scan. I trust you have reputable virus program and spyware and reg fix programs.

Am so sorry i made a mistake. I should have said "How can I clear "read only" on my documents? THe box that should be unticked is already clear.

The folder or drive may also be marked as read only. The files then will also be read-only.
Check the folder or drive on the properties tab.

Lenovo y510 suddenly turns off and the funny thing is that it happens when it's actually COLD weather , first you can hear the fan working really hard and then it suddenly turns off i tried cleaning it...

Go to 'Start' and then Run
write "msconfig" inside Run tab and press 'enter'
inside the 'System configuration utility' window click on 'startup' tab then uncheck all the applications except your current antivirus and press apply then 'ok' and then 'exit without restart' option.

Now right click My Computer and go to properties tab.
click 'Advanced' tab then under performance menu click on 'settings'
go to 'Advanced' click on 'change' and increase your virtual memory to 2048 in both spaces.
Now restart windows.

Just do the following steps and your issue will be resolved.

1) Delete all unwanted data from Drive C.

2) Delete all data that you have copied from Drive C to External HDD

3) Open My computer and go to Tools---> Folder Options---->Click on View Tab----> Check 'Show hidden files and folders' and select OK.

4) Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp and Delete everything that you see inside Temp Folder

5) Go to C:\WINDOWS\ here you will find folders like $hf_mig$, here you will have to Delete all the folders starting and ending with $ sign.

6) Empty Recycle bin and restart the PC and your issue will be resolved.

How do i remove a virus called antivirus is from windows vista HP laptp picked up virus yesterday and have tried maleware but it is still infected

MAN, a nickel for the times I have had to do this one...

WARNING!!! This tutorial is lengthy and has the potential to mess something up, so be forewarned.

Your best bet is to restart your computer into Safe Mode. This will keep the malware from starting on your computer in the first place.

Go down to your Start button and type in MSCONFIG, then hit enter.

In that menu you'll see several tabs, the 1st one (tab) you want is "Services". Put a check mark in the "Hide all MS services" box.
17e51b6.pngIn the remaining boxes you'll want to UNCHECK anything that doesn't look like it belongs. Best rule to follow, "If you recognize the manufacturer, you'll be fine to uncheck it" If you DON'T know what it is err on the side of caution and leave it alone.

Once that is complete go to the "Startup" tab. Now things "could" get ugly... So here are some rules... 1. If it says Microsoft LEAVE IT ALONE!!! To be sure, you may have to hover your mouse over the programs Command line to see if it was (program location) was assigned by MS.
d06c92c.png UNCHECK any box that alludes to being the malware manufacturer. Sometimes its as easy as the name of the rodent's posterior that made the program; sometimes, it has a gibberish title like "xdbxdxbdx.exe" (yes, it'll be that ridiculous).

Now that that is done you can go in and remove the software 'by hand'; meaning that there won't be an uninstall option anywhere on the computer.

Hopefully you have all files unhidden and accessible. If not, you'll have to go into your Control Panel and then File Properties.

Select the "View" tab then scroll down to "Hidden files and folders"... Selcect the first arrow and UNCHECK the following three boxes...
a561b2d.png
Then hit apply... You can leave this window up if you want to return the settings back to the original.

Next go to "My Computer" and open up your "C" drive. You'll want ot go to the Windows directory (file) 1st; scroll down to the "Temp" folder and open it.

EVERYTHING in that folder MUST be DELETED. Otherwise the malware could return.

Once that's done, come out of the "Windows" file folder and go up one folder to "Users". Open that, look for YOUR user account/folder. If other folks use your computer you'll have to do this process for them as well.

Once inside you'll want to find the "AppData" folder. The actual; icon should be muted in relation to all the other folders. Open that and go into the "Local" folder. Find the "Temp" folder in there, open it and delete everything that is in there. You WILL have one file that won't/can't be erased and it should read something like "FXSAPIDebugLogFile.txt", this is completely normal, just let Windows skip it and come out of that folder.

Now, back inside the "Local" folder, see if that pesky malware program folder is in there. If it is, erase it! Then back out of the local folder and then go into your "Roaming" folder. BE CAREFUL, it can get ugly in here so don't be erasing something you use. REMEMBER!!! CANCEL is ALWAYS your friend...

You may have to open a bunch of the folders and look in to see if the named malware is lurking inside or not. Once you find it, delete the whole folder with extreme prejudice...

Once gone, come completely out of the your profile folder and tackle the same issues with others that use your computer.

Now, I have the 64bit version of Windows on my systems so there will be 2 folders you'll have to go through. If you only have the 32 bit version of Windows then the "Program Files" folder will be the only folder you need to touch (as the other "Program Files (x86)" folder won't be there).

Again, go through this/these folder(s) carefully and be sure to delete the offending program's folder.

Come completely out of all the folders and close out your "My Computer" window. Go to your "Recycle Bin" and erase the contents like a banshee!

Reboot (unless you want to return your folder options back to their original state;m then go in reverse of the directions above)...

You now have a programmed malware free laptop, worthy of framing.

Hope this helped...
