Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

Read only documents

I'm opening word docs , on Vista platform, and they(folders and documents) are all checked read only. I uncheck the read only tab and click apply...the system processes the request...but the folder(s) all remain read only.

What can I do to gain access to these documents to edit them?

Any folders and documents under a read only folder will inherit the permissions from the parent directory.

Try copying a few files out of where ever you are saving them to and correct the permissions on a totally different spot on your directory stucture.

Also make sure that administrators and everyone are in the permissions with all the permissions checked boxed.

Make sure the account you are signed into are part of the administrators group and is not a limited rights user.

This is not normal and yes it could be a virus. Make sure your virus definitions are up to date and do a full system scan. I trust you have reputable virus program and spyware and reg fix programs.

I think this has nothing to do with the Operating System (Windows 7 or Vista). The issue may be because of the different versions of MS Office. As regards, MS Office 2007 files can be opened normally with Office 2007. However, if you wish to open Office 2007 files with Office 2003, you have to install MS Office compatibility Pack, which can be downloaded from Microsoft site.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

Printer won.t print ..... Before it stop printing it was throwing out a page that I was printing and wouldn't stop.

Go to the printers folder; Control panel/printers and there right click on the printer icon and select open. You should see some print jobs queued up. delete them, restart the system and try to print again. If this doesn't work, Go to the printers folder; Control panel/printers and there right click on the printer icon and select properties. In the pop up menu go to the advanced tab and look for hold mismatched documents and uncheck its box. If you do not find it under the advanced tab, skip through all the tabs to see which one has the "hold mismatched documents" option and uncheck it and click OK to exit. Now try to print again.

Good luck & god bless!

Every time I click print button it opens documents folder and wants to save to a folder. Can't get rid of this. Thank you!

When you go to print next time, after you select Print and the Print window comes up, look for a small box the has "Print to file" next to it. Uncheck the box and that will allow you to print the document.

Thanks for using Fixya.

All words file are automatically open in powerpoint or unable to read

You need to make sure that the file type is set to open as a *.doc (Office 97 - 2003) or *.docx (Office 2007) Open up your 'My Documents' folder and then go to 'Tools' then 'Folder Options', then click on the 'File Type' tab. Scroll down until you see the file extentions for Word ( DOC or DOCX). When you click on them, you will be able to change what they open with.

Hello,
I've found a couple of solutions, some might not be exactly what your looking for. EDIT: Soultion #2 should be your answer...

Solution #1 - Change the Documents Folder Template
  1. Click the 'Start' pearl (button)
  2. Under your name and icon, you should see the 'Documents' option.
  3. Right click 'Documents' and then select properties.
  4. The window should pop up and read 'Documents Properties'
  5. Click the 'Customize' Tab
******* Soultion #2
  1. Go into your documents folder.
  2. Off to the left side you should see the 'folders' section
  3. Under 'Desktop' you should see the folder with the windows account username. Go into that folder.
  4. Under the the folder you should see all of the default Vista folders, EX: Contacts, Deskop, Documents, etc.
  5. You can right click each folder and select properties, then under the 'Location' tab you can select the location of all of the files, and such where you want them to be.
Hopefully this helps you out, my directions could have been a bit rough if you have any problems please reply to the post!

My Windows Explorer does not show extentions

By default, file extensions for known file types are hidden in Windows XP. However, you can change this setting so that file extensions are shown for files in a certain folder or for all files on your hard disk.
To show file extensions, first open any folder on your hard drive, such as "My Computer" or "My Documents." Then select "Folder Options..." from the Tools menu as shown below.
545a526.gif When the Folder Options window opens, click the View tab. This will show the file and folder view settings.
95b32b0.gif One of the options under Advanced settings is "Hide extensions for known file types." If this option is checked, uncheck the checkbox and click Apply or OK. This setting is system wide, so unchecking this box will make file extensions appear in all folders.
If you decide to hide file extensions at a later time, you can check the box again and click OK to revert back to the previous settings.
