My ice maker seems to jam up. Not the auger/dispenser part but the ice tray mechanism. It has done it before and I thought I pressed the reset button on the bottom of the ice maker but this time it did not work.
The ice cube tray is jammed in the "dump" position, the ice cubes dropped out but now it will not return to the "fill" position. Is there a way to unjam the mechanism and reset the ice maker. Also, is there a way to fix the cause of the jam to prevent it hapening in the future?

Not real familiar with that specific model but it sounds like the heating element isn't working to loosen the ice from the tray as it's dumped. A typical ice maker has a small heat element under it to melt the surface of the ice just slightly while it dumps.

I looked at the plastic piece the solenoid was moving (from Guest's comment 03/07/08). Pushed the plastic piece up (had to push pretty hard) and it reset the solenoid to its' start/beginning position(-?) Plastic piece came back to lower position - was free to move up and down. The solenoid is working now (hear the loud clicking and see it pulling the plastic piece up) to get cubed ice, instead of putting it thru the crusher.

I would contact Hotpoint direct for this one. It sounds like a design fault to me.
What I think may be going on is that the cubes are melting too much, then refreezing lower down.
Set your freezer to -18, and the fridge to +2 and see if that changes things any.
Check seals in that area. Where is the moisture coming from to generate the frosting? - Is the location high in humidity?

It isn't supposed to free wheel and the only solution that I know of is tumbler replacement. I have the same issue and am currently hunting replacement parts.
