Then when she went to lift her foot to put it back onto to peddal to open compactor her shoe caught the pedal from UNDER it and engaged the compactor. My wife did the same thing with her foot. The tcbarton instructions worked. The dull edge of a butter knife worked well to turn the gear with out getting greasy. The huuum suggestions where not relavent to the my GE Profile model.

I had the same issue... tcbarton's instructions worked like a charm, though! It's working great now! Thanks!

I had the same problem with my GE trash compactor. I fixed it using the advice of tcbarton. Too bad I don't have his address--I would like to mail him a check for his advice. Thanks

I have the same problem and with three kids, lots of parties, this has happened at least 5 times in one year.  This isn't anyones (fault) except for the poor design of this model.  My old GE trash compactor worked great and never ever had this problem.  We "upgraded" to this new model when we updated our kitchen to stainless appliances.  It broke in three days.  Yes, GE comes over for free and fixes it, but in the mean time you have to wait for at least a day with no place to put your trash (and it smells!)  My free year of service is up and I am glad I found this fix. Thank you thank you!

This has happened a couple times to me and the fix is fairly simple. The problem is the trash ram is pushing down on the edge of the metal of the trash compartment because the door is partially open. The solution is to back-up the ram the the door will close.

To back-up the ram, you will need to pull the compactor out from under your cabinets and unplug it. Turn the compactor on it's side to expose the bottom. There is a plate on the bottom that covers the motor gears. Remove the plate and turn the large gear counter-clockwise to back-up the ram screws (at least this is how it works on my model works). The gears are a little greasy so you may need to add some after messing with the gears.

Good luck.

Wow. What a great solution. My husband would rather set himself on fire than do anything around the house so after walking around a half open compactor for 2 weeks I decided to tackle it myslf and it was really easy. Thanks TC. You saved me an expensive service call!

Great tip and easy solution. Thanks for posting this, and I wonde how many things we can do ourselves saving time and money. Of course the service companies want to keep these type of knowledge private, it's how we have made our world. But the smart ones use the new tool 'internet' and get the answer, the rest is usually a few screws, turns and pull and it's fixed. Thanks again for this great tip

I have found that you can take the metal cover form around the moter and top end of the motor shaft has hex to turn it with. Same thing just no greese.

What is the model number???????????
First know that you are under full warranty from GE for one year. No charge for them to fix it!
I will tell you to turn off the breaker to the compacter for 5 minutes and see if it resets the system?
mean while I am looking up the compacter in the repair guide.Waiting for your response

These were important tasks I found for you

Key-knob switch may not be in position

•Make sure the switch is in the ON position.

    Drawer may not be closed

•The switch may not have been held at START long
enough to start the compaction cycle.
•Check to make sure the drawer is firmly closed

.Compactor has an automatic thermal cutout
•If you have just compacted repeatedly, this protector
may have opened the motor circuit.
Wait a few minutes and the cutout will reclose automatically.

    Drawer will not open

The ram is not all the way up Turn the key-knob to START and release.
•Make sure the ram is in the up position.

WOW, I have had an this issue with my compactor for a couple of years, I got it open and have been using as a regular trash receptacle. I finally got desperate because It got stuck in the down and found this answer. I got it back up and trash removed. It looks like my gears are worn or need adjustment. but I'm on the road to fixing this long time problem.

THANKS

How remove stuck compactor from under counter?

Thee should be two screws from the compactor going into thE countertop. (You have to get a light, then shine straight up under the countertop. Remove the screws, then you can slowly work the compactor out of the hole so you can work on it.

Ge profile trash comapctor loud banging noice

You have something wrapped on the compactor screw assembly (The assembly is a threaded rod about 24 inches long and 3/4 inch in diameter. ). Most likely it is plastic bag or some other plastic. Pull the entire compactor out (remove the hold down screws first). Then look for the obstruction on the screw assembly, cut it off and try while not in the compactor hole to make sure it works.

Ge compactor stops after just starting

the running cycle for this type of trash compactor is a max of about 30secs. The fuller the bag is the shorter the cycle. However, if this is not how yours is running try checking to see if there is any trash stuck between the ram and the basket. Or make sure that the foot peddle is still staying in the "up" position.

I have a GE trash compactor I have to hold up the foot pedal for it to work. When I let it go the compactor stops. thank you

There is a spring that holds up the pedal. It is broken or has come apart. By the pedal in the up position it is a safety switch allowing the compactor to run. You may have to repair this or simply put a small block under the pedal of the unit to run.
I hope my suggestions helps and all the luck to you.

Compactor ram stuck partially down & door open 2 inches. How do I get the ram to go back up & get the door closed?

We just had this same problem. Your problem is most likely abroken plastic gear found at underneeath the bottom of the compactor. Pull out the compactor and turn it upside down. Remove the bottom panel and that is where we found the broken gear. We were able to retract the ram and open the drawer by manually turning the drive chain using an ajustable wrench. Clockwise is compact, counter clockwise is retract.

Compactor continues to run when cycle is complete

the little white swiitch that the foot petal pushes is bad.
it may help if you push it in and let it snap back.
That was a temporay fix for me, but I ended up having to replace the part.

Trash Compactor Model GCG1500LOBB. the foot

I also found that after 2 years my GE Profile Trash Compactor (purchased in June '07), the pedal was hanging down on the left side. I searched the internet and called GE to no avail.

After a few attempts, I finally solved the problem by removing the screw on the left side and adding a metal "L" bracket, with the bottom of the L flush against the back of the front panel. That way, when you depress the pedal, the screw can't pop out of the metal it's attached to.

Good luck!
