Clarification Request

Posted by bossbii on Nov 22, 2008

My DVD ROM has failed to show after booting. It is also removed from the BIOS. I was surprised though that after several effort to resolved it have failed and I almost concluded that the DVD drive is defective, it showed one day. But unfortunately, after using it for just two times, it vanished again. When it showed up I managed to write down the name of the disk as follows: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA Device DVD/CD-ROM drives. Please, assist me fix this if you can.

Same Problem

May 06, 2009

-   i sent my laptop away to replace the fan and presumably the repair team updated my computer, because when i got it back it didn't show my dvd burner, i managed to get it to work twice, after a fiasco of restarts but since i've got nothing, i've tried this method listed above but my computer doesn't show any upperfilter or lower filter so i'm lost as to my next course of action, any ideas? -   Myn Donos

I got the fix from Microsoft and run the exe to fix the "upper" something and after that it can see the CD/DVD drive. I think it is a Windows bug. Not a hardware failure. (Cost me a trip to local store)

try this ..

you must start regedit ( start -> run [See screenshots at the bottom] Type here: regedit )

search the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
search for "4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318"
if you doesn't find anything, search only for a part of the string.

now search the propertys UpperFilter an LowersFilter and kill the value. If only one prop. is there, you must kill only the one value

on my laptop it works!!

Try This

Step 1: Start Registry Editor loadTOCNode(3, 'whattotry'); Start Registry Editor. Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry loadTOCNode(3, 'whattotry');
  1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
  3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
  4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
  5. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
    • If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
    • If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. Click Yes when you receive the following message: Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed. Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry loadTOCNode(3, 'whattotry');
  1. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.

Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.

If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  3. Click Yes when you receive the following message: Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
  4. Exit Registry Editor.
Step 4: Restart your computer loadTOCNode(3, 'whattotry'); Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.

I did not get an error code, but, my drive would not read any discs.

Contacted the HP factory & they told me to do the following:

I ran a virus scan on the drive, did a hardware change check on it, updated the driver, which would not up date, uninstalled & let the computer reinstall the drive. Restored the recovery original drive drivers.

Nothing worked so they are shipping me a new replacement drive. I happened to look at my other HP dvd drive in another laptop & it looked different, because, I found I had a 1/2" gray felt washer around the mounting post, that was not letting me get the discs on very well. It was also keeping the discs too far away from the laser reader.

Guess it came from the factory this way, as I sure didn't put it in there.

Now it accepts all discs snapping on easily, & reads all of them too.

Called HP to have them cancel the shipment, an hour later, but their system, like so many others, does not allow them to cancel an order. Now, how dumb is that? If you load up your pistol, but don't shoot it, can't you take the bullets out?

I have an Acer Aspire 5610z with an HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA Device that just stopped working and wouldn't update the drivers. When I tried to update the drivers message said most up to date drivers were installed. I have been up to the Acer site and they are just about worthless. Had the same problem with my built in camera when I first got the laptop and Vista updated. It's getting old.
