Green light flashes 8 times

IF THIS IS A PIXMA IP2000, then
Eight flashes = Waste ink absorber* almost full. The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber to hold the ink consumed during Print
Head cleaning. Eight flashes indicates that this absorber is nearly full.
Press the R R ESUME/CANCEL button to clear the error so printing can continue for a while.
A longer term RESET IS possible BUT without changing the blotters, you're exposed to ink eventually running out of the printer without warning but... if you still want to continue, here are the reset instructions. Good luck!
1) With the printer powered off, hold down the resume button and press the power button.
2) While holding down the power button, release the resume button and press the resume button twice in succession. Now release the power button. The indicator will blink in green and remain lit in green.
Now press the resume button 4 times and then the power button. You've just reset the waste ink counter. Good luck. Just hope it doesn't come back to bite you!

Canon printer Pixma MP170 Alarm light flashing with code 5B00 Can not locate manual, what is the problem?

5b00 means the ink absorber is full. It needs to be replaced and the counter reset thru service mode.
QY5-0149-000 is the part number around $15.00 for the set. Difficult to change as the absorbers cover the whole bottom of the printer.

When I switch on my i550, The green light comes on , immediately changes to orange which flashes 8 times, reurns to green, flashes orange again. This process repeats ad nauseambut the thing will not print

8 times says the ink absorber is almost full and should print if you press the resume button. If it's too full it won't print until the absorber is changed and the counter reset thru the service mode.

Used ink ?

From CANON FAQs:

Issue: Alarm / Power light flashes orange 8 times consecutively (Waste Ink Nearly Full Error)
Solution: Ink Absorber Replacement Options i350

Ink Absorber Replacement Options This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.
Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.

Solution: Reset the printer
Resetting the Printer By resetting the printer's power, the print buffer is cleared and certain sensors are reset. If there is invalid data in the buffer, or sensors are stuck in a particular mode; errors may occur. Follow these steps to reset the printer:
  1. Turn the printer off with the Power button (if available).

  2. Disconnect the data cable from the printer (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared) .

  3. Unplug the printer's power cord for approximately 10 minutes, and then plug it back in. If troubleshooting a communication issue, reconnect the data cable (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared).

  4. Turn the printer back on.
Note: If resetting the printer does not work, please attempt any other solutions that appeared in your search results. If this is a hardware error on the printer, the printer may need to be repaired.

My i550 printer light comes green then flashes yellow 7 times and repeats this. Why? I receive an operator error message.

7 times means the ink absorber is full. You need a new ink absorber #QA4-1012-000, about $10.00. But you need a shop to reset the error code after changing.
