Question about Panasonic DMR-EX75EB-S DVD Recorder/HDD Recorder

1 Answer

Error U80 I have had the set about two years. When used as a digital turner for my old TV it often goes blank and shows 'Error U80'. If I switch it off and back on again it soon retunes and returns to normal. Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem in every way about the same age near enough. I hope it is not a sign of a common failure panasonic are keeping quiet about cheers

Have similar problem with DMR-EX75 purchased in 2006:

    (1) When watching digital TV screen goes yellow or pink (!) and Error Code U80 appears on the display.

    (2) When set to repeat recordings after one or two weeks nothing is recorded (although plenty of space in hard drive) and same error code U80 appears on the display.

Hi I have a DMR-EX95VEBS and my unit has done the same for a while and its only just out of guarantee.I emailed Panasonic and they have hinted they may pay to replace the faulty component. The unit is in a recognized Panasonic repairer and ive been told tonight its the hard drive at fault cost to replace with genuine part £107 plus vat. So i will be contacting Panasonic shortly.

Sorry to say that I have exactly the same problem with my unit which is also about two years old. From being an occasional issue this has recently become more regular.

I have a Pana DMR-EX75 DVD/hard disk recorder, about two years old. I have been getting U80 error accompanied by a green or pink or white (depending what mood it's in) screen for some time now. It seems to be very common judging by the entries on different forums. I did find this on
"According to panasonic who are looking at my unit with the same fault it is a hang up due to the high number of different frequencies used by broadcasters in our area. They have carried out a firmware update (just because one was avail according to the tech) but the main fix will be available as a software update from mon 18th dec 2006. This is a broadcast signal and is applied by doing a full reset and retune on the unit."
I'm off to try this on mine now but I am becoming disillusioned with Panasonic's reliability - had a Pana TV which lasted all of 4 years before it developed a power fault which could not be repaired. My previous Pana TV & VCR lasted over 10 years.

Hi all smilerand here, an update

Although my unit had a new drive fitted paid for by panasonic. This did not solve the problem. It turned out to be a back end printed circuit board(PCB), which panasonic paid the costs of.
So this PCB could be the problem with all your units if this is any help

I purchased a MDR513h/f7 hdd & dvd Player/recorder for my cable TV. I can not watch one channel while recording another. Comast said I must have a dual turner and that is what I purchased (I think)....

This model has only one tuner, I'm afraid. You can only watch one channel at a time, unless you split the cable signal going into it. One side goes to the recorder, the other to the TV. Then you use the single tuner in the recorder to record and the TV's tuner to watch the other channel.

Panasonic dmrez25 dvd recorder display showing u80 and can not change channels. no tv display but dvd still works.

Check that C1801 is not leaky. If so, check if IC1801 has blown. If it has blown, it will also need to be replaced.

Usually it's only C1801 leaky, replace it and thats it.

You can find the capacitor on the main board, under the digital board that has ribbon cables going to the dvd drive.

Hope this helps.

U80 error code on panasonic dmr-ex75. what is it? how do you fix it.

U80 indicates either that poor quality or
damaged discs are being used or that the laser is failing. It is a
self-diagnostic fault code, possibly requiring attention by a qualified
engineer. This is not an inherent fault with the product but a guide for
the engineer to know where, within the product, he should seek the cause of
the problem.

Not really a solution....RCA customer services (from India, I think), says that there is no way with that VCR because both the front and back (red, yellow, white) ports are input, and the only other jack on the tv is the one for the antenna. Since the digital converter is inside the tv, a splitter would do no good.
I would still have to get either a new VCR with the digital converter in it or get another converter box. An atmosphere of bait and switch is covering this hdtv scheme....

I get this too, and a little research brought me lots of anecdotes but nothing concrete, but here's was I deduce from the stories...

The unit has an auto-scan feature that periodically checks for new services or channels. Sometimes when it adds one it encounters and error and hangs showing U80. When you're recording it seems the auto-scan doesn't interrupt, so your program will complete. I've had several failures of timed recordings when the unit has stalled before recording was due to start.

Try switching the auto-scan off...

Functions > Others > Display > New service message

Hoepfully that will resolve it, though you will need to manually scan for new services periodically to make sure you don't miss out. At least you'll be on hand if it fails so it won't sit showing U80 for hours!

Black screen

How old is it?
Open it up and inspect the circuit board carefully for cracks.
TV makers use cheap, one sided circuit boards (meaning weak) that break easily. You are not supposed to drop them.
A cracked board can be repaired.
Of course it could be anything else.
My standard advice applies though:
My experiance is to not put money into a TV that is over ten years old. TVs stress out their electronic components worse than almost any other electronic product. After 10 years, there are so many parts that are ready to fail that your are probably wasting your money trying to get any more life out of it.
