Question about PC Laptops

1 Answer

Ethernet driver I just switched my laptop from Vister to XP Pro and I can't find a driver for the Ethernet card, in network connections the 1394 network adapter is there and it says its enabled but when I check it out it has no drivers and can't find a IP address. I'm pretty sure this has a Realtek in it but I couldn't find the right driver , I tried a generic one with no luck. I figured I'd try and get it up and running with my Road Runner Turbo before i worried about the Wireless Adapter. You folks were great help once before so I was wondering if you can help me out ? any suggestions, Toshiba was lame with help for XP. thanks in advance for any help Brian

yes it is a new Toshiba Satellite A215-S7437, that I am trying to switch to XP Pro instead of Vista, I have a Road Runner Turbo Connection and I want to use it with this laptop. Under my connection it says there is a 1394 ethernet connection enabled but it won't go online, I tried repair and it doesn't do anything, I checked and there is no drivers for the ethernet adapter, after i did a XP PRO clean install I haven't yet put SP2 on it yet, I do have the disk from Microsoft. should I run that and try again ? I believe it has a Realtek Network Adapter in the computer, it has Wireless capabilites without using my wireless card also and I have a wireless WiFi connection close by because when I still had Vista on it the WiFi showed up in available connections. I've downloaded drivers from Driver Guide.com and from Toshiba but still no luck. Any suggestions.

    Thanks

    Brian

Dear brian,

to get you an overview on which components you have, although not installed or recognized by win xp pro, download pcwizard2008, install and run the hardware detection program, it'll give you a lots of details about your computer, you can even save the data to a pdf-file.

networking components on your laptop may be:
- the 1394 adaptor
- the( to be found) ethernet card
- and if it is onboard or u plug it in via USB 2.0 port: the WLAN-adaptor

look for the (onboard?) realtek ethernet
card(rj-45 plug, similiar to dsl-cable)
using pcwizard, find out about the model and download suitable driver rom the net for winXP.
install and then try setting up a network/internet connection

(be wise enough to use the right cable:
for hooking up your lap to an internet dsl-router use dsl cable, to establish PC to laptop connecton you will need DSL cable plus crossover adaptor !)
i recommend to use cable connections, they're
older, more reliable and for safety reasons, better than wirelessLAN!

if you have used the 1394-network adaptor before, you are better than me, I dunno anything about it.

WLAN is an option when using laptop not at home- but don't clearly understand if the toshiba model u use already has WLAN-onboard device or u do use an external, USB 2.0 device to connect to the net...?
please give more detail about that- and do tell which toshiba laptop u use as this is helpful for me to find u a proper driver, if still needed.

C U here on fixya?!

Lenovo WinXP - Ethernet port issue

Hi. Try to check the steps as give below.
  1. Check the ethernet port with other spare wire if you have to check if it is a wire problem or if it is itself your ethernet port.
  2. Try to connect your ethernet port directly to the router to make sure ethernet port is working and there is no connectivity issue with the switch.
  3. Try to check the System BIOS settings and see if it is not disabled from there.
  4. Lastly download any free Live OS of Linux and boot your computer using it. See if the ethernet card is working or not.
Steps from 1-3 is for checking physical connectivity of the ethernet port and the last step is for checking OS issue. If network card do not work with Live OS as well, you can directly come to conclusion that its ethernet card that is not working properly and you need to get is repaired.
Cheers!

Install SP3 this is the latest service pack for XP.
Install the TCP/IP (Internet protocol)
Open Control Panel - Network Connections - right click on Local Area Connection - click on the box for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and the click on Install.
Then reboot the computer.
You network should now work.

Dell Inspiron 6000 won't connet wireless network after reinstall

check DEVICE MANAGER if the wireless card have the right driver installed. if you found that the wireless card have yellow exclamation point on the right it means, you installed a wrong driver.

check also in BIOS if the wireless card is enable and the switch is turn on.

press Fn+F2 to enable wireless radio/anthena (funtion key with wireless icon in blue color)

some dell laptop have hard switch located right side check this and turn the switch on.

if you want to see the icon n task bar, go to control panel....network connection...right click on wireless adapter...select properties...check Show on taskbar
