Seems like it's not getting enough gas

I have a 1998 GMC Safari. Yesterday when I parked, it showed the gas as being 1/4 full. This morning, the gas gauge said I was on empty. I went to the gas station and filled up, but it apparently had 1/4 tank of gas. On the way to work, the van started missing like it wasn't getting enough gas, and I noticed that the gas gauge would shake, and then bounce from full to empty and stay in those positions for a few minutes, and then bounce to the other side.

It could be the sending unit in the gas tank if it sounds like it isn't getting enough gas it could be that its not. The sending unit does go on these vans but there not that hard to change. Drop the tank off the van. Disconnect the lines and label them so you don't forget what is what. Then there is a seal on the top of the tank, pop that off and that should bring the whole sending unit out of the tank. Replace it with the new one and you should be getting the right amount of gas to the van and it should stop puttering and it should fix your gauge that is bouncing all over the place

It could be your fuel pump with your car not running right, the gas gauge thing i have no clue maybe the sensor inside the tank is messed up. or it could just be your fuel filter not doing its job. Htere are a few things it could be I would say Fuel Filter, Pump and maybe a vacume (spelling) problem, I would need to be there and hear it running or drive it to really figure out what it is

It seems you have an extremely scary and dangerous situation going on, you should never smell gas ....anytime. .

Because this is so far out of the ball park, you just have to get it looked at by a pro.

The fuel pressure regulator on that Vortec engine is under the upper intake plenum, on the back side of the central fuel injector. It is held on with a slide clip.

2000 GMC Safari AWD Suddenly won't start

I have a 2002 Safari with around 220k miles. I went out of town for several days and when I came back it would not start. I eventually got it started after about an hour. This happened again when I did not driver it for a week. This time I could not start the van. The fuel pump was spinning and it was getting gas. I took off the engine couling inside the van and inspected the rotor and cap. They were completely corroded. I put in an after market set for less than 30 bucks and the van started right up. I plan on getting the wires and plugs replaced but I don't think I want to do that myself due to tight access. Good luck.
