Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Good Morning: My name is Dann Spencer, mother of Chardae Spencer, who purchased Gateway T1620 1.8GHz/2GB/250GB/14.1"/DVD Model: LP-Gateway-T1620 subtotal $580.00 tax $36.25 total $616.25. Purchased 08/14/2008 salesman Alex. My daughter attends Ohio Wesleyan College in Delaware Ohio, she took the laptop to school and was unable to connect to internet, or any volume, as Delaway is 3hrs away from home, she had to keep laptop until she came home on her 19th birthday,October 15. she took the laptop in to Target USA 36445 Biltmore Place E, Willoughby Ohio 44094. This is where she purchased it and told them of her problem and that she had the tech at her school to try to connect it as well with no luck. At this time of leaving the laptop she told the tech. that she was leaving Sunday and would need it by then, he told her it would be ready in 48hrs, this was Wednesday and Saturday she received a call asking for her password, needless t say she was not able to take it back to school. Monday, Oct. 20, she was called to pick it up, which involved me going to pick it up and at the time I was told that windows needed to be installed, they found nothing wrong with the internet or the volume, then he told me that it had a bad virus on it. Which as u can imagine upset me very much, as my daughter worked and saved this money believing in Gateway buying ur product, never being able to use it at school, taking care of it and having it sit and now she's being told that they will not exchange it, nor can it be returned for another one, nor will she get any money back. Chardae is a Dean's list student and really does not deserve this treatment. Please help us.

I have purchased the replacement motherboard for my gateway 4640 (same model). I am looking for step by step instruction to swap the mother board. What tool do I need to pull the processor.

While you will not find a tutorial for your specific brand and model, the process is basically the same for all PCs. There are many good YouTube videos which will take you step by step. Here is a search link.

A Gateway motherboard

It's a tough problem to overcome. Gateway/Dell etc have support that you can contact or send it parts for a replacement. The downside is these parts are typically only replaceable through them. I had a Dell machine way back and wanted to purchase new RAM and a video card. They wanted to charge my an obscene amount for the new memory and the model I had would not support a newer video card. I ended up breaking away and venturing out on my own. I purchased a custom-built (by me) rig and haven't had any problems so far.
The upside to running with the "premades" is that they have good support and return policies, but doing stuff on your own (like replacing a motherboard) would probably violate the user agreement (meaning they won't warranty any work) and you'd be stuck.
Venturing out on your own is tough if you're not familiar with PCs. Vendors are usually pretty good about their return policies.

In your case, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, stick with Gateway. I would suggest then trying to see if you can "upgrade" your model PC to another and see if you have better luck.

Here's more info to my problem: Gateway laptop is 4 years old. Now getting message that says "System Fan Error!! !!Please turn off system and checkyour system fan!!" Computer was purchased...

Your CPU fan has failed! your heatsink overheats quickly and then shuts down to protect itself from burning up. Your motherboard is Not the problem, the fan is. This fan can be replaced by any compotent laptop technician. Make sure the tech has access to Gateway or has a source that supplys Gateway parts, as the part must be made for Gateway laptops and your model exactly! 90% of this type of problem can be repaired! Don't let non-techs at Best Buy or any other dept. store tell you your PC is "No Good". Take the time like your doing and do some research the problem before giving your hard earned cash to a 16 year old "Technician/salesman/commision/bonus" person.
If the Harddrive is undamaged and it can be mounted yes, your stuff can be saved to DVD or such. Be prepared though, this type of service can be costly so ask around and get quotes.

It sounds like you need to reinstall the driver for the Realtek network interface card (NIC). I recommend accessing the Gateway web site to find the model number of the laptop, and then download the driver for the Realtek NIC. This should restore the functionality.
