I have an old Williams gas furnace that uses a thermocouple. I have replaced the thermocouple and it still does not stay lite. How would I test the high limit sensor to see if that is the problem?

Similar symptoms for me on my Williams model 5009612

I just replaced the thermocouple and in the process of replacing it, the pilot flame became substantially larger, and the unit now appears to be working normally.

so i suspect that futzing with the thermocouple happened to vibrate loose whatever junk might have been in the pilot jet (assuming that the size of the pilot is limited by some sort of jet hole at the end... I don't see any easy-to-adjust screw on the valve body).

this is a both-sides of wall unit; there is a burner on each side; the pilot is split with a flame going to each side. the pilot flame now reaches to both burners, the thermocouple glows red, and it works.

but now i'm a bit concerned that the pilot flame is too large ! It certainly is much noisier than before.

anyway, you might just try tapping on the pilot jet to see if you can dislodge any obstruction ...

Update; note that you can adjust the pilot (there's a small set screw next to the ON-OFF-PILOT dial). We did that and it seems ok now..

To burn Lp gas there has to be a bigger spud (because of the density). Lp gas also has to be changed to a vapor and not liquid. Having a storage tank in the cold ambient can present problems due to its relative high boiling point.

Install universal thermocouple in williams heater

You may have a stuck gas valve. I would recommend replacing the gas valve. or have a qualified heating repair technician look at it for about $45. The price of replacing a gas valve by a heating repair company can rang from $300 to $450. The gas valve to a contractor cost $150. Find more heating repair pricing here.

Wiallwialliams wall heater wont stay on installed new thermo coup aready

Get a AA battery and tape a wire on each end, then attach the wires where the pilot generator wires to, mv/pv and pv usually,if it runs this way the valves good, the pilot generator makes 750mv or 3/4 of 1 volt, by the dissimilar metals in the pilot generators numerous thermocouples, they make 30mv each and are used on water heaters only now.
Dont run it with the battery if you sleep! test only.

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

Sounds like you have a defective thermocouple. since this Gas product, I suggest you contact a service company, I dont think you have the proper tools, to check for gas pressure's and leaks

Williams 3003622 Wall Mounted 30,000 BTU The pilot light goes out when the main flame shuts down. The pilot light will stay lit for days when heat is not called for but when heat is called for the furnace...

I'm having the same exact problem... At first we thought was the vent... but the way the flames goes out... it seems that there is "not enough oxygen" more than "blown out by the wind"... right after both main & pilot goes out, I can't even light any external flame inside the chamber... and it doesn't feel like the outside cold air coming in... it just feel like there is some sort of gas in the chamber that's so strong, it prevents flame... and the only thing I can think of is that it doesn't have enough oxygen, but too much natural gas, and flame can't sustain.

How do I lite a wall room heater

First, turn off the gas valve for at least 5 min and ventilate the room. Most wall heaters are lit the same as a water heater. Find a red button to push or turn the gas valve knob to the pilot position. While pressing the red button or the gas valve knob, hold a match to light the pilot flame. After it lights continue holding the knob for one or two minutes. If the flame goes out when you release the knob the thermocouple is probably bad.

I have Wiiliams direct vent wall furnace. I smell gas only when pilot is on and burner is not on. It does not smell when it is fully running (burner is on)

Dear Alex191: I am shocked and amazed that the Williams heater company is STILL knowingly and willingly selling faulty direct vent gas heaters. My problems took place in 1988! I bought a 30,000 BTU Williams DIRECT VENT from The Home Depot. I took the time to remove window sashes and run gas line to the Williams heater that I had placed in the window aperture. I was glad to finally have heat and be able to heat the area of the house where I stayed. Then I began to smell gas when the Williams was OFF. I traced it to the area where the pilot light gas tubing entered the combustion chamber. I removed the Williams unit and replaced it with an identical make and model and the SAME THING HAPPENED!!! I sat on my bed and almost cried. I had the gas company come out and they labled the problem as a "fuzz leak". The warranty repairman came out and had no idea what to do. Tightening the retaining nut did nothing. I called Williams and even back then they said that they were aware of the problem. They called me back and wanted to send me a part and asked me, "Can you work on it?" I returned the Williams and bought a Perfection-Schwank CONSOL heater that burns the air in the room and vents horizontally to a 4 inch vertical gas vent and was very satisfied with it. When they went out of business I bought an "Empire" brand gas heater. I don't know if I'll ever buy another direct vent heater from anyone. I will be glad to write an affidavit should you decide to suit the Williams company.

Wall Heater

If you have already changed out the thermocouple and the pilot goes out when the burner goes out, it leads to reason that the gas valve has a weak magnet or that the pilot is dirty. The cheapest thing would be to remove the pilot assembly and clean out the orifice. If it still drops out, you will need to replace the gas valve.
