Canon PowerShot A80 - no display through the lens

See this link. The symptoms indicate that your CCD (image sensor) failed. Canon will repair this at no charge, regardless of warranty status. Contact them as described at the link.

CCD problem and then lens problem

If the symptoms are similar as it was ccd imager problem then contact again with Canon for again free replacement of ccd imager chip in camera.
Can you post an image here that shows purple problem?
And if its lens problem as said by Canon then new camera would be better option instead of spending on its repair.

Canon powershot A80 camera. LCD display works fine but no picture. Camera will take pictures but no display and nothing but black appears on download. Everything else works fine. I think it is the lense?

Sounds like the CCD or the Shutter are not working. Canon only sells the CCD as part of the optical unit, which includes the shutter. However the new optical unit will require reprogramming of the main pcb to focus correctly

Vertical lines obscuring image

The matrix is dead. Probably because of an intensive light got into the lense while the camera was in night mode. It's dead. Nothing can be done.

Lens problem

If you've replaced the batteries with fresh ones, it probably has a broken zoom assembly. It'll have to be replaced by a repair shop.

Shutter Lag

Thats going to be a problem with most digital cameras in that price range (and even some $$ ones) really the only thing I can recommend is PF.F.S. That would be Pre-Focus -- Frame -- Shot. Many people try to frame a photo up then focus/shot all in one, but this does not always work. So if your looking to speed things up a little, just half press the button to get a prefocus and then do your magic. Really everything I talked about above was Focus-lag, not actually shutter lag. But since this is often confussed I thought I would add it in.

Camera As Webcam

For those interested... It is possible to use a Powershot camera as a webcam thou it requires 2 softwares: 1)PSremote 2)Softcam Basically I used psremote to create a viewfinder on the screen and den use Softcam as a virtual video capture device to capture the image on the "viewfinder". I tried and tested on MSN and it works. For software or more indepth instructions, feel free to email me at with the subject "Powershot Webcam". p/s: I'm using a Powershot A80.
