Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Lawn Mower won't start

I have a MTD yard machine riding lawn mower. It has a Briggs 17hp twin II I/C engine. I can't get it to start. I replaced the battery, soleniod, ignition switch, and starter. When I try to crank it, all I can hear is the solenoid clicking. I rechecked the battery to make sure that I didn't run it down with a multimeter, it reads 12.17v. I am lost, any ideas where i go from here?

O.k. I remove the new soleniod and replace it with the old one. What do you know, I got action. Now I don't have enough juice to crank it up. I put a multimeter across the batery and it read 10.15v. I guess I bought the wrong soleniod. Will you posted.

Today I charged the old battery. I took out the new battery and replaced it with the old charged battery, and what do you know. Everything worked fine. I guess I bought the wrong battery.

Its a thing of beauty to see problems solve themselves. It seems to me this trial and error approach is very taxing and could have been avoided if 1, your small engine repair guy/Craftsman/Sears had sold you the right parts from the start, or 2, you had bought the right part... from the start.

I stalled the engine by grabbing on to a tarp. Now it will not start

I would assume the mower deck was engaged, check the shear half moon key in the shaft and flywheel. they are made to shear to prevent engine damage. other than that, check all the safty switches that keep the mower from starting unless they are engaged.

I NEED TO LOCATE A DECK FOR A 46" YARD MACHINE

You probably have in your area a number of small engine repair shops. You will have to get on the phone and start calling around for a used mower deck. They usually have many old mowers in there yards. If you decide you only want new it could be very costly. GOOD LUCK.

Can I replace the blades on my 38in MTD/Yard Machine ride on without removing the deck? ie. from underneath.

If its in good condition you might be able to but be careful so mower doesn't fall on you. I've used my car ramps and backed the mower up the ramp and was able to do it safely. If you have any difficulty removing the blades, then I'd take the deck off. It really isn't that hard to remove the deck.
