Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop whose screen has got damaged. As a result, i have bought a LG monitor/TV 19" flatron widescreen. It's model no is M198WA. The problem is that when i switched on the monitor, 2 very bold black lines were coming on top and bottom of the display screen. Also when i pressed the menu button, instead of seeing the options as text i could see those in colored boxes. But fiddling with the remote control for sometime, it came back to the right display. I faced this problem again when i switched it on. This problem is quiet inconsistent as it sometimes comes normally and sometimes with the problem mentioned above. Can you please suggest me any remedy for it. Thanks in advance.

Being both a monitor and hdtv it is set up to take different inputs. i use a 26"lcdtv to do the same thing here. a couple questions.... Does the tv have a "PC" input like the one on your computer for the monitor or are you using a dmi or hd cable for the connection.
I know my tv will try to use the HD format on ALL pictures if i connect it to anything but the PC connection. I got around this by installing the monitor correctly in the comuter.
On the remote , you should be able to hit the "format" button to change the bars at top & bottom, these are shown when you are in a mode other than one native to your tv.

Bought a 2nd hand LG Flatron monitor It opens on Windows but nothing else works. Do I need a driver? Its a Flatron 1718S and I can't get a driver on line on my other computer with the LG monitor. Im using...

You should download the manual for this monitor. You can find it here: http://elektrotanya.com/?q=showresult&megnev=LG&megnev2=L1718&kategoria=&kat2=all

If it is working fine on Windows but not on another operating system, it is very likely a driver problem. You'll need to check the manual on what operating systems are supported. Visit the LG website to download available drivers. Good luck.

Video outputs

There are TV/Monitor hybrids out there. You could get a 60'' plasma widescreen and use it as your desktop monitor for example. But as far as watching 'streaming video' from like....HBO from your local cable provider, you will not be able to do it with this computer unless you purchase an add-on card (be sure you have the open PCI slot first).

You would need something like the cards listed in the url below (again, be sure your motherboard is compatable with it first).

As far as I know, that is not possible. You can have both screens show the same image, but it is not designed for a true "split" screen.

The vid output is just relaying what the screen shows, it's not a true "2nd" output

Broken screen MT 3421

You have a serious problem. Replacement screens tend to be ridiculously expensive, I was once quoted $850 for a Sony Vaio, not including labor. Also the replacement procedure is quite involved, if you don't have a background in handling delicate electronics, both in terms of mechanical issues and also the real danger of damage by static electricity.

Sometimes you can get lucky and find a replacement screen on Ebay. There is no way to fix the screen, except replacing it.

Another half-way solution is to hook up a cheap external monitor or a compatible TV to your laptop, and use it as a desktop.
