Question about Ubi Soft Catz 5 (Windows) (680901) for PC

Catz 5 not opening

When I insert the Catz 5 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, a window opens which contains options, such as "Play", "Uninstall", etc. When I click on the word "Play", another, smaller window opens, containing a loading bar and some adorable images of kittens and puppies. When the loading bar is loading, however, it only reaches approximately three-quarters of the way to the end, and then the window closes and the game does not open - nothing else happens at all, in fact. If I double-click the desktop shortcut to "Petz 5", it only opens the smaller loading window, and loads three-quarters of the way again, but at a much greater speed, and closes, yet again. I've tried multiple things, such as restarting the computer, wiping off the CD-ROM, and removing the disk then replacing it in the machine, but to no avail. Do you know of any possible cause for this, or any way it could be fixed? Thank you for your time. Best regards, Blaahhh.

Re: Catz 5 not opening

Maybe You should try playing a different game and see if that works. If it doesn't, the the problem is with your computer. Or maybe the game didn't install properly. Try uninstalling it . Wait a little bit, Then reinstall it and try to play.

I installed Petz 5 on my computer and when it's done loading, it says "The sound will not intalize." I went into the game, anhd the sound didn't work at all! Plz help!

First, please make sure that you have the latest firmware and drivers available for your CD/DVD-ROM drive. This can be done by visiting the CD/DVD-ROM manufacturers website.

Then, clear out your C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory (this is a storage area where files are stored before they are installed). Delete everything in this file, and your problem may be solved completely.

If this does not work, you may also need to clear out your Internet cache (temporary Internet files):

(Internet Explorer)
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on Tools -> Internet Options.
3a. In IE6 - Click on the 'Delete Files...' button on the Genral Tab
3b. In IE7 - Click on the 'Delete' button under the Browsing History section of the General Tab.

(Mozilla Firefox)
1. Open Firefox.
2. Click on Tools -> Options
3. Click on the Advanced tab -> Network Tab.
4. Click on the 'Clear Now' button under the Cache section.

- Empty your recycle bin

- Run Scandisk
1. Click Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools
2. Select Scandisk
3. Select your hard drive. If you have more than one, you should scan each drive individually.
4. Click Standard
5. Check Automatically fix errors.
6. Click Start

- Run Defrag
1. Click Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools
2. Select Disk Defragmenter
3. Select the hard drive you wish to defrag and click ok.

- Before attempting to install the game, make sure that you have no programs running in the background or system tray.

(Windows XP / Vista)
Go to the Start menu, (and choose Run if using XP). Delete anything on the Open line that you'll find there, and type in the work MSCONFIG. Click on OK, and that will bring up a program called the System Configuration Utility.

Look down the list of startup items (not the tab labeled Startup), and choose Selective Startup (if it is not already selected). If you don't see this, make sure you've clicked on General, near the top of the window. Once you've chosen Selective Startup, uncheck 'Load Startup Items', and leave 'Process System.INI file' and 'Process Win.INI file' checked. Once you're done here, click OK, and let it reboot your computer.

Your Windows environment may look different and you may get an error relating to your sound device not working (ignore this for now). Try running the game again. If the game loads and seems to be working, the problem is most likely related to one or more programs you have scheduled to load with Windows. You can then revert the settings back the way they were, and in a trial and error fashion, disable some programs using the startup tab (in the msconfig utility) to try to find the culprit.

(Windows 98/ME)
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the close program window. End all open tasks EXCEPT Explorer and systray.

- If you still have problems installing, you may not have the necessary hard disk space to install the game. You will need to clean out unnecessary files on your hard drive or otherwise allocate more space if you wish to install and play.

- Try a safemode install.
1. Copy the contents of the disc to a new folder on your desktop.
2. Restart Windows in Safe Mode.
3. Run setup.exe from the setup folder in the new folder you created on your desktop.
4. Restart the computer in normal mode and try the game.

- If all else fails, your game disk may be scratched or damaged.
1. Inspect the underside of the CD closely.
2. If their are any smudge marks, dirt, or scratches, clean the disk.

NOTE: When cleaning CDs, wipe from the center of the disc to the edge using a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use a circular motion. Also, do not use paper cloth which can scratch the plastic and leave streaks.

3. Insert the CD and try installing again.
NOTE: Many common install problems are caused by scratched or damaged disks. If you think your game disk is damaged and needs to be replaced, please contact a Support Representative (Ask a Question tab above) to obtain replacement information as well as an RMA number.

How To Fix A Non-Loading Problem On Petz 5

I have written this so many times, that I decided to make a tip out of it so I dont have to keep answering the same question over and over.
To fix the problem when your loading thing doesnt load fully, and it comes up with an error message, you need to follow these instructions.
a)Save your petz to a flash drive, or CD or floppy disk. NOT to the computor as they will get deleted. (this step is only if you want to keep your petz)
b) Uninstall and click "No" to "Do you want to save your petz?"
c) Install again.
d)Put your petz back on your game, by putting the Flash Drive/floppy/CD into the computor and copying the petz files into the petz folder. (if you kept your petz)
e) Play the game from My Computor, Petz 5, Play.
You will need to have the disk in whenever you want to play for e) to work.
If this doesnt work, ith saving your petz, skip steps a), and d).
Hope this tip helps. :D

I put the cd rom into the drive and nothing happens. I go to click on the icon under my computer and it causes the window not to respond.

Confirm that the CD drive is not a CD-ROM dive and the CD you are trying to open is is not a DVD. CD-ROM drive wil not open a DVD ROM and in some cases will cause the system to stop responding if youtry to run it.

Petz5 won't play or uninstall Plz help!!

First check if the cd is dirty, scratched or damaged. If this is the case then you can try polishing the scratches out with a soft cloth and liquid metal polish (only polish the side away from the foil/label and try to only polish the scratched area) don't worry about removing scratches completely - start with the worst, then try the disk again - it might just work. If this doesn't help then try the disk in another machine or another disk drive. if it now seems to work then although your drive may seem to work on other things it is probably getting tired. I am assuming that you purchased the game and have a legal copy. If not then that is likely to be the problem as the software protection will not allow you to play the game without the correct CD. If you downloaded the file for the Dogz part, try burning it to CD as an image file (Check your burning software for details) and try running the game with that in the drive. If that doesn't work, then you are able to disable the CD protection file yourself if you have purchased the game so you don't have to have a CD in each time you want to play. go to: and search for dogz or petz and download the appropriate crack for your version. find the install directory where the game is installed(usually c:\program files\ubisoft\petz) and then copy the crack into this directory, and say yes when it asks if you wish to replace the slightly larger file - now the game should work. Please ask for more details if you are unsure how to proceed with this and I am happy to oblige.
