Are you connecting to an extension or docking port Or are you connecting the usb cable directly into the laptops USB port? IF NOT, connect it directly to the computer and try again..
Are the USB connections snug on both ends?
Have you upgraded the operating system or made any hardware changes recently?
please dont rate yet-- there will be more steps---

That might have been the "autoplay" function, looking at the files, trying to inventory the files,
to see if it should run a program, or open a program to view photos, or open Windows Media Player to view audio/video content.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

This happened because your brother's computer is infected with a virus or otherwise corrupted. Take the drive and both computers to a local tech to further diagnose the problem and that tech can probably recover your files. I think your brother should pay for the repairs - his computer has some malware that may have overwritten your files. This is why you should do two things - first, always have two kinds of backups - copy vital files to a usb memory stick, and second, don't lend anyone any device you plug into your computer - that is how viruses are spread.

I have a Simple Tech (simple Drive) 320GB external hard drive.the light comes on But my computer won`t recognize it. The light comes on but that`s it.

Try connecting the drive to a different computer, to see if your computer is the problem.

If necessary, open the external case, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some computer, to see if the disk-drive itself still can be accessed.

If not, and you have "important" data on the disk-drive, search the Internet for a professional "Data Recovery Service" -- you ship your disk-drive to them, pay them a lot of money, and they repair the disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a brand-new disk-drive.

Unable to:open file:file may be locked or in use to access privileges be incurrect

It is quite simple. You will have on your hard drive, where your data file is located some locked files. they will be called lock .flk or maybe even one called access. When you see these files, drag them to the trash and empty the trash. If the trash cannot be emptied. Shutdown your computer and restart.

This should release the lock. These files are normal to see when you are in MYOB but if you crash out they should dissappear, occassionaly they will not.

Acer aspire 5100- 3949 NEED Hard Drive Drivers

You don't need a hard drive driver, this is taken care of by the BIOS.
If the hard drive has disappeared then it is most likely the hard drive is dead. Go into the BIOS configuration to see if it has detected the hard drive, if it is not detected that is why the laptop won't bootup.
To confirm or check if the hard drive is faulty, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port (you may need assistance from a computer savy friend).
If this computer cannot see this as an external drive then it is faulty. If the computer can see this drive as an external drive and you can open the folders and files on the hard disk then the hard drive is OK and the fault is probably a faulty disk controller on the laptop. This cannot be fixed as it is part of the motherboard and the moherboard needs to be replaced and this may not be a cost effective solution. It may be better to put your money towards a new computer.

Simpletech hard drive not working

I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.
