For every piece of software besides windows that starts when you power on your computer, some of the computer performance is sacraficed. this will cause the computer to hesitate , perhaps show a blank or black screen a little longer as the computer starts or comes out of hibernation.
Most of the software you install will have a little box stating something like "start when windows starts" that is checked by default when you install it. always pay attention and read as all of these will slow down your computer if running at startup.
hit CTRL+ALT+DEL once your computer is fully started, this will open your task manager.
select the PROCESSES tab and count or go to the bottom and see how many processes are running right when you start the computer.
Most of these can be turned off, windows only needs about 20 to run efficiently wiuth networking, granted there will be some for the printer also.
write down what you see and and programs that dont need to be running can be set , either in thier preferences or windows settings to not run , thus speeding up the computer..
please post here again after you have checked this and i will assist you if you have more questions.

How do I get missing Icons back on my PC screen

The higher the resolution, the more likely you will be able to see your icons.
From Microsoft.com:
1. Open Display in Control Panel. 2. On the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider, and then click Apply. 3. When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. Your screen will turn black for a moment. 4. Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the change. Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to your previous setting. Note
• To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display. • A higher screen resolution reduces the size of items on your screen and increases the relative space on your desktop • You can switch your screen resolution temporarily to 640 X 480 if you have games or other programs that are set to run at that resolution. To switch, right-click the game or program (on the desktop or on the Start menu), and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and then select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your display reverts to its default resolution when you close the program. • Your monitor and video adapter determine how much you can change your screen resolution. You may not be able to increase the resolution above a certain level. • Changes to screen resolution affect all users that log on to the computer. • Only the recommended screen resolutions are listed. For additional settings, click the Advanced button on the Settings tab, click the Adapter tab, and then click List all Modes. Select the resolution, color level, and refresh rate you want.

How to Turn Off Safe Mode on Windows Vista

The Safe Mode is used to detect the technical and software problems in windows Vista. This is an effecting way to diagnosing the problem, that's why most of the technicians prefer this way to resolve the problem. But Safe Mode disables the most of the advance functionality of your computer. So use the Safe Mode only for diagnosing the problem and as you diagnose and repair the problem get back your windows to normal mode.

For reverting back to normal mode at windows Vista, an option occurred which has to be select within limited time and if you select the Normal Mode option within this limited time, your windows will revert back successfully but if you waste the time, you have to restart your computer again for getting this option. You can select the Normal Mode option through arrow keys or by pressing the number at which the Normal Mode will appear.

Sometime your computer does not display the Mode Selection Menu. This is not a problem you can get this menu and revert back your windows Vista into Normal Mode through the following instructions.

Instructions
If you want to revert your Windows Vista into Normal Mode from the Safe mode but your system is not giving you option to select the mode, follow the given instructions:

Restart Your Computer: To restart the computer you need to take the following step:
- Click on "Start" button at the left side of Task Bar. In Safe Mode of windows Vista the Start button appears at the same place where it appears in the Normal mode. Select "Turn Off Computer" from the Start Menu. Then, Select 'Restart" from the pop-up menu.
When your computer has been shut down place your finger at F8 key. As your computer starts to boot computer devices for restarting your computer, press F8 key again and again unless a menu appears on the screen. This menu is Mode Selection Menu.

Note: If your computer won't give you Mode Selection Menu at the screen that's means you have lost the time of getting option. Now choose the Normal Mode from the list by the following method:
- You can select the Normal Mode by pressing the number on which Normal Mode appears in the list.
- You can select the Normal Mode manually through the Arrow Keys. When a monitor displays "Input not supported", the display resolution is set too high. To resolve this, change the resolution to a supported resolution of the monitor.
In Windows XP
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
  2. On the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider to the desired resolution and click Apply.
  3. When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. The screen will turn black for a moment.
  4. Once the screen resolution changes, confirm the change by selecting Yes. A timer will count down for 15 seconds to ensure the change is desired.
Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to the previous setting.
In Windows Vista
  1. Press the Start button , select Control Panel, select Appearance and Personalization, select Personalization, and then Display Settings.
  2. Under Resolution, move the slider to the desired resolution and click Apply.

Black screen

It looks like the screen inverter has failed. It is repairable, but check the cost of repair against the cost of replacement to see if its viable.

It's a component on a circuit board which has died.

You've not lost your information, that is still on your PC, a separate unit.

But what I would suggest is, when you've got a screen sorted out, you back up your information. I would back up Music, Photo's, Movies and Documents you need to keep to DVD's. Then you've got the for years to come and they're not going to suffer a mechanical failure.

Reboot into Safe Mode by repeatingly tapping on F8 while in process of rebooting and then select "last known good configuration". If that fails reboot again to safe mode and select safe mode with command prompt and in the command prompt type "chkdsk /f /r " <enter>

If that doesnt work do place your Windows CD into the Cd-Rom, reboot and select option "Repair"
