Question about Freeplay Energy S360 AM/FM/SW/DAB Radio

1 Answer

No sound from speaker

Bought the radio a long time ago but only now opened it up. Did the wind-up routine. Put it in the sun. I thought it was broken. Absolutely no sound from the speaker. Finally, I plugged in a headset and it works okay. Is there anything I can do to fix the volume control? Can it be fixed?

Re: No sound from speaker

If the volume is adjusted when the headphones are plugged in I'd be looking at the speaker. It may need replacing. I don't know if the headphones are run from a preamp or attenuated via the audio output IC. If it's run from the preamp then the main output could be kaput. Check the speaker and it's wiring first and go from there.

No sound from speaker but through ear piece I get sound.

Many devices will automatically switch off the large speaker when ear phones are plugged into them. Also there may be a switch or button or prompt on your radio to switch between regular speaker and ear phone jack. Look for that first.
Try connecting and disconnection ear phones while listening to a station and see if the problem is intermittent. If is works sometimes but not every time then it is most likely an internal connection.
You will have to access the inside of the radio to investigate further. Connect a working external music or sound source with speaker wire to the terminals inside the radio that connect to the radio's speaker. If the radio's speaker works with the external sound source then you know it is a bad connection inside your radio. If the radio's speaker does not work with the external sound source then it is most likely a faulty radio speaker. Look closely for a broken solder point or broken/disconnected wire.

I have a 2007 HD Ultra Classic. I installed Hogtunes speakers and amp about 1 year ago. Last week I was riding N on 395 when speakers went out. Checked fuses,ACC fuse was blown. replaced, still no sound....

07 units are notorious for vibtation damage. 08 and later have an anti vibration modification. You need to check your fairing brackets and make sure they are secure. Either way, the radio is repairable. Iron Cross Audio can do it and also install the anti-vibration modification. (

You have come to the right place at the right time to get this solution! I just had this problem not to long ago. First I research it online and pulled up this website ( They said that reading will come up because you haven't received a Routine Weekly Test (RWT), and that you should recheck the programming and monitor it next time to see if it is functioning properly. Lucky for me though, one of our area's news stations was hosting their "Weather Radio Wednesday" event at Walgreens. One of the news station's weathermen and some people that work for this civil emergency radio agency, were there to help program weather radios. I told one of the radio programmers the "check reception" problem and all he did was take the batteries out, put them back in the radio and check the programming information to make sure everything was okay. He said everything was fine, just make sure the antenna is extended out fully (which I had already knew that and had it near a window setting.) When I came out of the store, I looked at the LCD and "check reception" was not scrolling across the screen anymore. Maybe you should what this guy did and just monitor the radio for an RWT. They usually have these on Wednesdays at 11:00 am.

06 ultra radio no sound from speakers only headset.

Switch is fine. You have a damaged audio circuit caused by vibration. Check the bikes mounting brackets. probably broken. The radio will need to be repaired.

No sound after dropping S350.

Probably one of two things:

The dropped caused the speaker leads from the PCB to Speaker to disengage (check the earphone jack, too... 'cause it is in the circuit)

The bounce cause the Audio amplifier IC to become desoldered from the PCB.

Original Freeplay windup radio.

Can't help you with the aerial. Mine made the same noise when winding down and I fixed that by pouring talcum powder around the windup section. Let it unwind and allow the talcum to go in,,,, and more grinding noises.

Crank problem

the drive mechanism has failed. try this. ensure it is fully unwound. then open it. then look for some part of the drive gears or belt that has broken or has slipped off. caution, you MUST ensure it is fully unwound prior to opening it.
