Re: Starting the laptop
Unplug all external devices. Remove the battery and ac adapter. Then try again with just the ac adapter and no battery. If it works, turn it off and put the battery back in. Everything should be fine.
What your daughter did is absolutely harmless, unless your laptop is set-up not to go to standby mode then eventually hibernate when the lid is closed. In that case if it was put into a laptop bag while running it may have overheated. If that's the case it may need a motherboard or CPU, have it checked out.

You didn't say what version of windows you use. With some versions you can bypass the password in the safe mode. When the computer starts press F8 until it starts to beep. This gives you the option of starting in safe mode. When you get to the screen where you should put in the password you get the option to log in as administrator with no password required. Log in, go to control panel, find your username and change or delete the password.
If you cannot get in this way there is a program available from http://www.windows-password-recovery.net/ which costs 36 euros or 49 dollars. When you pay for it you get the option to download an image file which you burn to a cd. You can then boot any windows computer with this cd and it gives you the option to delete the log on password without going into windows. You then remove the cd and restart windows with no password.
Your laptop frewall settings should be controlled. You may have two firewalls. One is dealing with Windows firewall, other one is dealing with your modem firewall settings. Check the both please.
Checking the firewalls:
Step 1 : open this address http://192.168.1.1 Log in with your admin password. Check the firewall settings. This will solve the problem. Or.
Step 2 Start/Desktop Manager/Security Center/Firewall
Hey there, if they do have a guest account, at the log on screen, press ctrl, alt delete 2 times then type in the user name guest with no password. If not, let me know and mayb we can try something else
try starting in safe mode(press power button like turning on normally then tapping F8 when the screen shows dell on it). choose safe mode. put administrator in as thu username and leave password blank. hopefully it works. if it does get you into the system i think you can go to control panel and then user accounts. you should be able to see the other user names there and you can delete passwords too. then you can restart and log on normally hopefully
