On the bottom of the laptop is a label and on this is an imprint called the Service Tag. This tag has alphanumeric format usually seven or eight characters. Would you write that down and then post it as a comment to this post. Thanks. I can then log in as a tech and look up your laptop's configuration as sold.

From what I saw on a cursory look on the Dell web site did not have any data related to a Mitsumi drive. Is there any chance this drive is an after market part?

Beginning with Windows2000, all CD Roms relied on the Windows driver and not a proprietary driver. What you could do is open Control Panel and select Add New Hardware or Find Hardware Changes. As I feel you deleted something in Windows and not a Dell driver itself.

To repair a Windows installation insert your Vista DVD, and bootup from a cold shutdown. As you boot up allow Windows to proceed as if installing itself. Eventually, the installer will notify you that a version of Windows already exists. At this point you are given two options. One is to install a fresh copy of Windows or Two repair the current installation. Choose to Repair the Current installation. Please note that: you will be asked to enter your product key at the end and activate Windows again. So, look at the bottom of your laptop again and the Windows Sticker will be there and carefully write down and review the Product Key; be accurate.

This last procedure will repair anything you damaged by accident and you be done and on your way again.

Worldvet

Hello and Welcome to Fixya.

Seems like you're having a software issue that prevents your system to read/run a disc when inside the operating system. I have included the official fix from Microsoft:

DVD Drive Troubleshooting

All you have to do is to click on "Run Now" and follow the on screen prompts - just remember to eject any CD that you may have inside the drive.

Please note that if this does not work, then the drive needs to be replaced. You may contact dell in case that happens.

Hope this helps and Thanks for using FixYa.
