Question about Toshiba MV20FL4 20 in. TV/VCR Combo

1 Answer

A black box pops up on the screen and just leaves the border area around the box available for viewing. It only happens on a few channels at a time and seems to alternate as to what channels are affected, i.e. it used to be on the weather channel all the time, but now that channel is fine and ESPN and Fox News are have it. It appears to be like a pop up window, but the window is solid black with no wording on it. Other than that, the TV works well.

MRS3309,
It sounds as though the closed captioning has some how gotten turned on. Not all programs are closed caption supported so the box will not show on every channel nor will it necessarily be on the same channel all day. Go into the menu on the tv and ensure the CC option is turned off. You may have to go into set up or preferences to locate the CC portion of the menu. I hope this assists you and thank you for using Fix Ya. If I can assist you further please let me know.

The degasuss circuit is staying on. There is a coil of wire wrapped around the picture tube. Uplug it. The picture may or may not remain in proper color. Take it in for repair to be safe.

Black box in middle of screen

It's a text box for either closed captioning or demonstration mode. Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning. If you have trouble doing that, then just restore factory settings.

There is a large black box that appears on my screen and makes it so that that I can not watch the TV. It takes up the entire picture and all that I can do is hear whatever my be playing. Once it comes on...

Check your closed-caption settings. You will probably find that you have captioning on and set for "text" mode. Turn it off and the problem should go away.

What's happening is that with text mode on, the set clears an area (the black box) for text to be displayed, but there's no text. On channels or programs where captions aren't being broadcast, you don't have this problem. Most TV remotes have a button for quick access to caption settings, so it's easy to get this turned on without knowing it. Then you're suddenly facing the black box.

Please take a moment to give this solution a fixya rating if it gets your box cleared up, and thanks for asking here!

Black Box on screen

By your description it sounds as though the closed captioning option has been turned on on the TV. Only certain programs are CC capable and that accounts for the box moving from channel to channel as some broadcasts are not CC CAPABLE. Go to the menu on the tv and ensure closed captioning is disabled. This should resolve the issue. If you need more help please let me know.

Black area on screen,

Hi omsoc,

This could possibly be an issue with closed captioning. While some closed captioning is a marquee-type text near an edge of the display, your television may have an option turned on to display a different channel of captioning that would likely display a large black box on your screen if there is no data to display. This would explain why this would take place suddenly at the same time each night, as well as why pressing the display button would cause it to disappear. I suggest you look into your menu to try turning this option off, then watch the channel you normally watch at this time. If this does not resolve the situation, I recommend you contact your manufacturer’s product support line.

Thank you,
Jason,

Black Box at bottom of screen

The text mode has been activated either thru your cable/satelite box or your tv's. It is activated because the closed caption portion. If you think its because of your channel providers call them for the process to deactivate it . If it's your tvs check your menu's to make sure the closed caption portions are turned off. Good luck

A black box appears on the screen

Hi,
Just happened to see your black box problem associated with your T.V.; Thought I would pass along an idea for you to check into, and let me know if it helped...Check into whether or not it has a onscreen text block mode, if it gets into this mode by accidentally pressing the wrong buttons on the remote and or TV, it could and I have seen, at least with zeniths, a big black box which will cover the whole screen except for a 2 to 4 inch border around the box and outer edge of the screen...if this is the case, find someone familiar with the correct setting for the set associated with this problem, and get it back into the right mode....Hope this helps..T.
