ALWAYS CHECK THE WARRANTY BEFORE DOING IT YOURSELF
If this is a Dell computer , it indicates a hard drive failure. if so here is the solution:
Look at the bios and see if the hard drive is detected.
To get to the BIOS, when you turn on the system, you will be confronted with a black screen with the dell symbol in the middle, if you look at the top left of the screen, you should see something like
Press F2 for boot options
Press F12 for setup
Keep tapping the F2 or F12 key for boot options. this will take you into the BIOS.
Check also that it says enabled
Next see if you can boot the dell diagnostics partition. {F12}, then select diagnostics, once you have the diagnostics available run the memory tests and the hard drive test.
you should get a report when it finishes looking something like this:
DST Short Test: Failed
Error Code: 1000-0146
Msg: Unit 2 : DST LOC Contains previous error(s)

READ TEST:
0F00: 0244
MSG Block: 57301297

VERIFY TEST:
0F00:1A44
MSG Block: 57301297
if there are more than two errors ide suggest a new hard drive. BUT TO SAVE YOUR DATA BEFORE ------>Do you have anything important? if you do, you will need to do a repair install of XP and get your files before the hard drive fails completely. Use the service tag to obtain full specs of the computer at dells website. This hard drive has previous errors, and has generated new ones. It looks like it is getting ready to fail. You may be able to use a xp disk to perform an operating system repair, the dell operating system CD will do this also. Here is a link: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm If you follow the directions exactly, you will not lose any files. Please continue to post about this issue, and operate this computer as little as possible.

Let me throw a twist in the works.

I am getting the same error/failure. When I try to boot I get as far as the Windows Load Bar and it just sits there never moving forward.

Heres the twist. When I remove the hard drive and put it in another laptop, it boots up and runs like a champ. The drive is obviously not failing, if it were, it would fail on every laptop it was placed in. So if it works great in one and will not boot in another, whats the issue.

Any suggestions.

Hi starang91,

The technical meaning of the error code 1000-0146 or for short error code 0146 is = "DST Log contains previous error(s)." What this means that the Drive Self-Test (DST) already detected errors in the drive itself, usually bad sectors that corrupt data in the drive.

For this type of errors we susually recommend replacement of the hard disk drive since it means a impending failure of the hard drive eventually. So it''s important to backup your important files while you can still get into windows.

Hope this helps!

Peace! :)

SOURCE: Computer won't boot up. Error

Good day.
Error code 0146 basically refers to a hard drive. This means your computer is not detecting properly your hard drive or your hard drive itself is defective.
Let's first isolate the problem. Go to your BIOS setup (Pressing F2 upon power on) and check if your hard drive is properly setup in your BIOS. Make some necessary adjustments and save setting.
Turn-off your pc and try to check the data cable and the power cable is properly connected to your hard drive. You may also try re-seating the data and power cables - remove first and then connecting it again to the hard drive. Loose cables may cause problems. Power on the pc.
If you still receive the same error, then you need to replace the hard drive with another one.
Good luck.

Computer unresponsive and error code 200 -0146

that is a dead hard drive. Im sorry. 2000-0146 means that the hard drive has failed its "self test" and is telling the computer it has a malfunction. *sometimes* the drive can be used with the malfunction just long enough to get your data, and sometimes it dies instantly: it depends on *what* the malfunction is, but in any case, the news is bad. Your drive is dying or dead and it must be replaced.

2000-0146 error code how i fix it

Try the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Blank screen, error code;0f00c.

The error you appear to be getting during diagnostics should not be related to the computer not starting. The error you are referencing has to do with a blank CD not being in the CD/DVD drive during that part of the test.
I ran the diagnostics again with a blank cd in the drive and I recieved error code 1000-0146.
