To add the hard disk icon back onto your desktop, first click the "Finder" button in the dock. It is the dark and light smily face icon at the end of the dock.

Next, click the "Finder" menu item at the top of the screen and then "Preferences". In the "Finder Preferences" window that opens, click the "General" button. From there you can select what system items appear on your desktop. You can click "Hard disks" to re-add the hard disk icon.

When you used the archive and install feature on the installation did you remember to preserve users. If you did not, all you have done is archived the system which will show up as a folder called "Previous System" and none of your files. What I would do is have a look in the users directory the top level of your hard drive and see if there is an archive folder or disk image in there.

Wont boot on its own, wont boot with install disc,

As the hard disk appears to be showing up when you boot up using the install disc, I would suspect that the system is somewhat corrupted. You could reinstall the system again and if you are happy starting from scratch and wiping the hard drive select this option failing that and there is some data on the imac you could install using the preserve user data. A fresh install should sort out any problems. Hope this helps.

Apple imac g5 desktop 17 boot disk boot hd failure. Reboot the pc is to click in c to begin to read the cd of I restore and nothing is only an icon to blink

It sounds like your hard rive has failed. You could if you can ask someone for a loan of a disk utility such as disk warrior to check the hard drive. If it has failed have a look at the following websites on how to replace it

When i turn on my imac it does not go to my desktop just stays on with a floppy disk icon on it

I am assuming that you are running OX S so it sounds like the system is corrupted. What I would do is to get your instal disk and boot up holding down the c key on your keyboard. Once you have booted up go to the file menu and run disk utility to verify and repair the hard drive. Then go to the instal menu and instal a fresh system remembering to preserve the users data so you do not wipe anything. Hopefully this will work.
