Error Code E225 on Canon MF4150

I am getting a system error code E225 on my Canon Imageclass MF4150. The book says to turn the printer off and wait a couple of minutes before turning back on to reset it. This didn't work. We unplugged the power cord and waited and that doesn't work. We called Canon Customer Support and they stepped me through a "clear" through "Additional Function" keys. It really appeared as if the "clear" didn't do anything. I thought he told me to push the wrong key, but he said no. We have to send in for repair. We have a Canon Imageclass MF4150, Serial #RVM12243. Any other suggestions? The error comes on when I copy or when I print.

I tried your "Stop/Reset" solution, but that doesn't seem to help. As soon as I try to COPY, it gives me the E225 error. I have been printing to the Canon, however, without getting the error.

  • armstrongc Oct 20, 2008

Thank you. I would like you to see what you can find out.

  • armstrongc Oct 21, 2008

I have tried the off/on idea several times and for long periods of time (to no avail). We don't have a shop near us. We are a mining company in a small town (under 1000 people). The closest repair shop would be 150 miles away of the type you are describing. I'd like to try to fix this one first if I don't have to spend alot of money. We have 4 of these all-in-one's in our building. It would be nice to keep them all the same.

  • armstrongc Oct 21, 2008

Only this one this having the problem and the others are connected to other computers and as single-user printers/copiers. I am hoping when I shut down for the night (in a short while) that the printer will reorganize and everything will be okay tomorrow. I haven't tried to shut everything down yet.

  • armstrongc Oct 21, 2008

This printer does not have an off/on button that you push and release. It has a switch that is either off or on. I tried holding down the "start" button (to start the copying) while turning the printer back on. I was able to get a copy out of it, but then the E225 came up. I turned the printer off and on again and the next time I tried to copy, I immediately got the E225 (no paper even came out). Also, I have no button to feed paper, so that did not help either.

  • armstrongc Oct 22, 2008

Thank you for all the help and suggestions. The problem could not be resolved at the work site. Your "team" is very knowledgeable and helped me to feel that I did all I could do before giving up. Thanks again.

I have the same problem and I just bought the machine. The error code started when I tried to print my first document. Do I have to return the machine? None of the info in this posting helped.

Printer tunrs on, does its selftest (including moving the scanner's head), then it makes this long squeek sound and stops with 'System Error Code e225'on the display.  Any solution would be appreciated.

Hi,

Try this quickly to see if it helps and if it doesn't let me know as there is another trick we can try next.

With the Printer On:
Press and hold the Stop/Reset button for a full 6 seconds, using the one Mississippi method of counting or use a watch.
Release the button. Restart the Printer and try to print again.

Okay, good to know this occurs when you try to Copy and not when you print. The Copy function is nearly the same thing as a Scan. The document is scanned and the paper is then printed with the scanned image as the print source.

As this is the case, your MF printer may have trouble with the onboard ram.

If you will allow me to, I can help you get this resolved in a fairly quick manner, just not suddenly. Should you need to do some copying in the mean time, I'd find another copier for now. I suspect you have already.

Don't give up on your printer just yet. Oh, by the way, your experience with Canon's Help Desk is not surprising. They don't hire actual techs who are prosl. We here at FixYa are working Techs who own our own businesses and do this on the side to help people just like yourself. In your case, for free which I'm pleased to do.

On this issue, I may ask another Tech to come in and take a look at your description and what we've tried together so far. These other Techs are collegues located around the world but use English as their first language.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

Have you had a Tech look this over or do you have a Tech Shop near where you live, not a Geek Squad or CompUSA. But real people running a real shop, it should look like a computer graveyard inside with parts everywhere (do I ever hear about this from my Lady all the time).

I took a look on Ebay for this printer, starting price $150, as this problem you have is not very common. That is to say, the Internet is not full of posts regarding this error code. In fact, there are only a small handful.

Canon stated to turn the printer off and then on again. You've done this, yes? The machine sells on Ebay for a lot less than retail. So, if you've come to love this printer and have toner for it, etc. it may be worth replacing or looking a new unit over as a replacement.

This may also be a good time to consider a different Multi Function printer, specifically I recommend the Epson RX line. I never get calls to work on them and there are several in use by my clients.

I have a 'hack' for you to try next. I thought I'd ask you about the above first, before sending you the hack and I'll ask the other Expert who wrote the hack in our Tips repository first as a courtesy call and to get his opinion.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

OK. I see. I live in Western Central Nevada myself. So I understand about being in a remote location.

Are all of your printers acting the same with this error code? Or just the one?

    Regards,
    Worldvet

  • Glenn Rogers

You could turn on sharing for at least one printer and then use that in the meantime if you are all on a network. And if you are networked, don't you have an IT guy?

I'm in Hawthorne, NV and Reno is 135 miles away so I can relate.

Go ahead and try this hack then, now or in the morning.

This 'Hack' may or may not work on your printer. It is a common hack we use all the time to reset a Canon system.

    1.) Unplug the printer

2.) Hold the Power button down(DO NOT RELEASE) and plug the printer back in

    The Led Should Be Green

3.) Still holding the power button down , press the paper feed button and release the paper feed button. The Led Should Turn Orange / Red

4.) Press the paper Feed Button Again

    The Led Will Turn Green

    5.) Release the Power Button

My thanks to my friend DarkLord1 from Trinidad for posting this sequence first in our Tricks repository here at FixYa.com

I hope this gets you going.

Thanks for the consult DarkLord1 that was just the insight this customer needed to hear. I'll see more of you later in the month I'm sure. Don't lay out in the Sun too much down there.

Armstrongc, sorry this has happened to you. And with three more on your hands you may want to look into a maintenance schedule you could use to keep the life of the other three living longer.

In the meantime, Sir, you can begin to plan on retiring this printer and then the others from your budget by taking some corrective action now and long range planning at your soonest.

    Best Regards, Armstrongc,
    Worldvet

  • Glenn Rogers
    Glenn Rogers Oct 22, 2008

I asked another expert to consult on this and you have a mechanical error that can only be serviced by Canon at the Factory as they do not release the parts needed to conduct a repair in the chain or belt that drives your light bar for a scan or a copy- same function, result is either printed or transfered as an image file to your PC.

You may consider the risk of having this same fault on your other printers too and take some measures now to be prepared for any future consequences of this model.

I'd encourage you to look over the Epson RX series of Multifunction printers. Cost Co puts these up on sale from time to time also. I'd avoid the HP line of products and you could also look over the Brother line of MF printers in addition to the Epson. Those are the only two I currently reccommend to business today. You can take this for what its worth. I'd encourage you to get another consult or two on MF printers from working techs, not salesmen.

Good Luck. If you chose to you can change your rating of this post.

This is crazy. But it works.. I had the same E225 problem for my canon printer. I just switched on the printer and lifted the scanner lid to see what is happening inside, whether the slider is stuck or sth! Amazingly the error disappeared.. Worth a try!!

Hi, I had the same problem.  Here is what worked for me.

When I got this MF, the scanner platter (the glass window) was broken.  So I removed the plastic framing along with the two plastic drifs on the left side of the scanner platter, and then the broken glass. At this point I started getting the E225 error.

I replaced the broken glass with a new glass, put back the plastic frame, but forgot to place back the one pastic ruler (the one closest to the center of the plater, with the A4/A5 markings on it, not the one with the transparent plastic film). The error was still there.

When I placed back that plastic ruler, the printer was as good as new.  The erorr was gone!

Hope this works for you guys.

I tried all the suggestions above but none of them solved my problem. I finally figured it out myself. I found the root cause of the problem is with the scanner lamp. There were 2 very tiny white holders on both edges of the scanner lamp dropped out. I remove the glass and put the white holders back on their original locations and now the error is gone.

So the conclusion is the error E225 simply means mechanical error, it cannot be any more specific because there are too many possibilities. Some found the problem with the ruler alignment, loosen connectors, etc. But one thing for sure, it has something to do with scanner parts.

I have tried just about everything on this posting. The one thing that did work successfully was reseating the ribbon going from the main board (control panel) to the to spot located under the glass. To get to it:
1. Turn off MF :)
2. Pull lip up and off. No need to remove screws or ribbon from back. The lid will slide out of the left and right holders and sit nicely to the side.
3. Remove 4 screws holding the plastic frame around glass. Lift from back first and move your way to the front. Be careful around the control panel area where the tabs for the frame are located.
4. You can now see the ribbon connected to the control board as well as to a small slot on the MF. Wiggle it to ensure snuggness. If needed, remove completely then reseat it.

Hopefully that helps.

Hey!! sorry to her of the problem but it appears that the error you are having is a stuck motor or broken gear chain (E225) Error code 225 = mechanical error.. You may feel free to open it up and look at the scanner and roller gears and see in you can find a loose gear or a cable. If not then its obiously a diagnostic error code given off by a false reading from the main control board with will need to be replaced. If you wish to send it to cannon for repairs please feel free to do so as chances of you fixing this by your self are very slim. Not that you may not have the experience but I'm sure you wont find replacement parts. I strongly suggest you dump the machine and purchase a new one and a cheaper one as well. Your problem is not uncommon and chances are it will still be common as long as they keep using cheap components and sell at a rather steep price. Unfortunately I cannot be of any help nor much anyone else insde here Canon is the only people that have the parts u need, and the tools to calabirate it when they are finished changing it.

Regards

Hey World Vet havent seen u in a while I'll return soon just have a few other loose ends to patch up..

Hi, i have solved the e225 on canon mf 4150. 1. open the the printer from front the way you would change toner. 2. there are two screws on top front right and left side, remove the screws. 3. remove the front grey cover of the printer then remove the right side white cover of printer. 4. then make sure all the connections on the circuit board are connected properly and it will hopefully solve the problem. the connection might be little bit lose or not connected, by moving the connection or pushing the connectors in the board solve the problem. that is how i fixed my printer

Wedm/Craig. I will glady help you, and I am extremely confident that I am correct. More importantly I wish to to help you avoid The "COPIER DUDE COMPANY" taking a large chunk of your cash. I work for a "COPIER DUDE COMPANY" and we charge $200 just to say "yep, you have a problem". So lets start from square one and please forgive me if I get long winded and redundant. You tagged onto a request for help initiated by a customer called Brassmonkey who had a code of E000020-0181.This code means that when the copier attempted to calibrate each color (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) as it does from time to time to maintain optimum copy quality, the target values for yellow could not be achieved. Not even close. Yellow is the first color the copier checks and is used as a reference for the rest of the color calibration. Therefore it tends to be the primary error code in the event of a problem. Now here is where it gets hairy. Hang with me here. A patch of color is placed on what is called a transfer belt. This belt is where the image/copy is created prior to it being transferred to the paper. In fact, there is a point in time where the color copy you requested exists on this plastic belt, held by a staic charge, and is waiting to be pushed onto the paper as it goes through the machine. So when the copier goes thru periodic calibrations, again it makes a yellow "patch"....looks at it....... reajusts....looks at it... until it hits the optimum target of quality. And it does this for every color. So, now to the NUTS of it all. You have a drum&developer "unit" for each color. One dual unit for each. They are fed toner as they need it. Any one unit can fail due to shear normal use,and this is not a function of toner.{I have seen weird shit that defies logic before but toner is on the wierd shit list} Now, at some point the "plastic transfer belt " fails. So no matter how new the drum/developer units are, the "medium" from which the colors are being judged by cannot provide a valid measurement. Its like an old guy like me trying to read small print with scratched glasses. New text does not mean I can read it better. So now you have an 000020-0225 code. This means that the magenta color calibration failed. This tends to lean toward the transfer belt(scratched glasses) being worn. Two color calobration failures make ya wonder. Canon says that under the best of conditions the tranfer belt is good for 300K. These are all remote troubleshooting suggestions but at least you will have the benefit of these details. And the transfer belt is A: not real expensive and B: not labor intensive. I hope this helps. Good luck and take care. ............SPINAL........
