Flame on furnace lights for about 30 seconds then goes out but blower still blows

Inside your furnace their are two probes one is inthe shape of a paper clip the other is a straight probe this one needs to be taken out and cleaned using emery cloth be sure not to touch this probe after cleaning or you will have to replace

Tractorman44 thanks but misunderdstood husband! When thermostat turned up the fan comes on before flames ignites. Plenum heats and furnace runs.


If the fan comes on first, then the flame ignites, it USUALLY indicates there is a problem in the ignition process of the furnace. Most new manufacturers have the adjustable 'time off' sequence for the blower, and most initiate a call for the blower to run within a pre-determined amount of time AFTER a call for heat has been established. ALSO, and this is where I think the problem is, the ignition sequence starts immediately upon a call for heat. If there is a heat ignition failure, it will attempt a restart. USUALLY, they allow 5 restarts within a certain timeframe then the circuit board locks out the heat sequence until it is reset by cycling the power or cycling the thermostat manually.

What I think is happening with yours it that your ignition sequence is experiencing a 'flame failure' upon a call for heat....then it re-establishes the ignition sequence, which takes another 30 to 45 seconds. During this time, the blower automatically starts (because the allotted time has expired) and blows COLD air because of the initial flame failure. In the meantime the ignition sequence establishes a flame on the second or possibly the third try and then you feel the warm air.

IF this is the case, ultimately what will happen is that the furnace will continue to experience 'flame failure' and eventually fail to the point of 'flame failure lockout' and you will have no heat, but the fan could possibly run continuously.

At any rate, without being able to be there to troubleshoot and test components physically, this is just a calculated and reasonably reasonable guess. What it is telling you is that you probably need to contact a reputable, reliable service organization to give your furnace a good going over before it lets you down on a good cooooold night!!!

I hope this helps you understand the basics of what happens within the system and bear in mind, this is a 'generic' sequence and possibly NOT the exact sequence of your particular furnace.

It sounds like the flame sensor is bad. If thats not the case you may need to replace the control board. You should make sure the flame sensor is directly into the flame.

I turn on my furnace and the coil warms up and then the igniter comes on producing flame but only for about two seconds and then it goes out and the furnace just winds up blowing out cold air, after about...


It sounds like your blower motor is not firing up for some reason. This could be a circuit board issue or simply a dead blower motor. What is happening is that the system is basically sensing that the heat is not being "blown" to the rest of the house and it shuts it self off to prevent damage. After the flame comes on you should hear another motor come on. Also, most furnace's have whats called an error led that will blink when the system shuts off. Each blink represents a different error. You will probably get something about high heat limit reached.

I have a Rheem Furance that has turned off. Just a few hours ago the main fan turned off. The Furnace doesnm't light even the draft fan does turn on and then the main fan blower motor turns on. I can hear...


You will need to reset the furnace by turning the power off to it. Then as the furnace tries to light, watch the LED for blinking. Hopefully it will give a code other than 1. Try checking the air filter for blockage, make sure all hoses are free of moisture and any drains are not blocked. Check the air intake and exhaust pipe for sags where water could block it.

The sequence of operation is this:
Thermostat calls for heat, the LED may blink telling you it registers the call. The inducer (exhaust) blower starts closing contacts in the pressure switch (small disc shaped thing), the igniter glows orange (seen thru a small window high up on furnace front), gas valve opens allowing main burner to light, flame travels to all other burners, flame rod senses flame within a few seconds and keeps gas on. Room air blower starts within 90 seconds.

Any deviation or delay in this sequence and it goes into lock-out.

Doesnt blow any heat we checked all connections furnace clicks on but never gets warm we think maybe its the heating element but we are not sure how to get to it to check


Problem: Your furnace will not ignite the gas to produce heat for your home. When a furnace has a bad ignitor what I see most of the time is the following sequence of operation:


1. Thermostat calls for heat. 2. Draft inducer motor starts. 3. Pressure switch attached by a small plastic or rubber tube senses the negative pressure produced by the draft inducer and closes. 4. Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds to a minute before you hear a gas hissing sound. The ignitor did not glow, the flame sensor (a small metal probe about 1/8" in diameter, with a white porcelain base) does not sense the flame, so after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds stops with no ignition of gas to heat your home. Your furnace shuts down and goes into a lock out condition until you turn your power switch back off and on again. Then the sequence starts all over again with no ignition of the gas. Solution:You probably need to purchase and install a new ignitor. I would suggest that you inspect your ignitor closely for cracks. Make sure you do not touch the ignitor with your bare hands. If you do not visually see a crack, then you could have a furnace control board problem or a limit, rollout switch problem.The furnace's control board might not be supplying the voltage to the ignitor. If your furnace lights and the gas stays on for 8 to 10 seconds, then shuts right back off, then you need to clean your flame sensor with light sand paper or steel wool. You might need a new flame sensor, but most of the time they can be cleaned an will work well after cleaning.

I have a newer tappan heater and get 4 blinks on led for error code the unit starts up fine and has flame but flame goes off when blower kicks on

My goodman furnace keeps lighting for about 10 seconds than goes out lots of clicking sounds

Having problems with Carrier 58RAV furnace. Goes through the motions, but gas never turns on. I think it is a problem with the LPGS. Please advise. Thanks


On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).
