My Sony just tonite turned on with shifted coulours.. looks almost like some magnet effects but none was near it.. otherwise works fine except people are mauve.. No control inputs make any diffrence at all.
Is this fixable or is it dead (bought it in '91)

Re: Weird colours all of a sudden
These sets sometime have a fault with the auto degaussing circuit. It will start to work and because of a bad solder connection, the unit shuts off the degaussing right in the middle of it cycle and cause a rainbow effect of color. Your gonna have to go in and trouble shoot the degaussing circuit my freind, BUT if your not a tech I highly advise against this as theres alot of high voltage inside these sets. Have it checked out by a service person. It really depense on you if its worth it. Personally, myself, I wouldnt invest a dime in a 15 year old set. Good Luck

It sounds that there is some magnet near by TV that is affecting picture tube. Please remove any extra speaker or any thing that has strong magnet inside, unplug TV for 20-30 minutes, replug back in, turn it ON, hope that will solve your TV problem. Thanks.
May be PURITY on the tube, an effect of older CRT tubes caused by a build up of magnetism around the screen, easilt cured with what is known as a magic wand. An electrical wand that produces a magnetic field and is waved in front of the screen to de-magnetise it. Ant TV engineer can do this for you.
sounds like you have colour impurity problems caused by a magnetic feild being near the Screen. Fist check for any new magnetic feilds nearby. If there have been no new changes, it may also be a faulty PTC device that automatically degausses the tube. When they fail, you will get problems with impurities by way of coloured spots on the screen.
Try disconnecting the set off at the wall for 30 mins, this will initiates the auto degauss process. If all is ok, the spots will be gone. If not, you will need to have someone handy with a soldering iron that is also familiar with TV repair to replace the PTC for you.
Please rate this solution. Happy to answer any other questions you may have. Cheers.
It seems that it is a degaussing problem. TV sets have a degaussing coil that when the TV is turned on , it automatically demagnetizes the screen. Never place any speakers or anything magnetic near or on top of your set. if you see swirls of color and like you say, wierd colors, it is that the screen is magnetized. Turn it on and off with the switch. Not the remote control. The degaussing coil only works by manually turn the switch on and off.
Its magnetic effect on picture tube. Power Off TV for 20-30 minutes then turn it On, hope problem will be resolved. Please also check and remove any speaker or some thing have magnet near by TV. If color spots are still there, picture tube need to degaussed / demagnetized.
Discoloration of this sort is caused by magnetism. All CRT TVs (like yours) have a de-gaussing coil around the picture tube that de-magnetizes the screen (more specifically the shadow mask) every time you turn it on. It is likely that the circuit that controls this coil is at fault. There is probably a cold solder joint where it connects to the main circuit board.
The other scenario is that someone (small child generally) has run a magnetic object very near to the screen, magnetizing the shadow mask (inside the picture tube) and causing a rainbow effect. This is less likely if the rainbow effect is a nice even circular shape. Generally if it's been magnetized by a magnet as described the discolored areas will appear blotchy.
In short, if you have some electronics skills, get in there with your soldering iron and touch up the connections to the de-gaussing coil. If not, find someone who does.
The discoloration problem is due to the near by magnetic field (magnetic interference or due to magnets) appliances like speakers which are very near to monitors ... so
what you have to do is just keep some distance to the monitor from the
speakers and other magnetic appliances and then press menu button &
just give degauss..
your problem is simple
it is called colour patch.
it is basically due to change in direction or you must have shifted or tilted.
it might be due to magnetic effect like spkr, telephone near by it.just remove from that location.
put of the set for 15 minutes &put it on .problem will get clear.
ask tv tech. to degauss it by dega.coil.it hardly 1 second job.
