My computer will not turn on ever since a recent power outage, but there is a small green light flashing on the back of the computer. There is no light coming from the power button on the front though. A friend said to get a new power supply?

I've also had this problem to occur with my HP Pavilion a705w Desktop. After a recent power outage, my PC would not power on. The power indicator on the back of the computer is flashing green and the power button on the front flashes, but will not initiate a powered connection. I've read that I may need to replace my power supply. Any instructions on how to do this properly?

I had the same problem, I unplugged my computer to move it before it had fully powered down. It wouldn’t start and all I got was the flashing lights.

I asked a friend who suggested I remove the power to the motherboard then reinsert it while it’s hot. Here’s what I did. Unplug the computer. Touch something metal so you’re grounded and don’t create a static shock on the motherboard. Now GENTLY pull the 16pin wire harness off the motherboard. Now plug the computer power cord back in. Then GENTLY plug the motherboard back in. With any luck the fan will start up and the computer will begin booting up. It seems to be some type of problem where the power supply doesn’t recognize the motherboard so it doesn’t do anything until it “sees it”? Probably some type of a safety to prevent motherboard burnout?

If there is a light flashing on both the back of the power supply and the power button that that definitly means that your power supply is faulty and/or there is some cord loose or malfunctioning so the best thing you can do is just replace the power supply and/or call customer service and have them suggest the best power supply for your system. if you dont know how to replace your power supply or even take apart your computer, message me here the name and model number of the computer and you can go into a live chat with me or another expert on this site about how to go about dissasembling your computer and replacing your power supply correctly.

A flashing amber power LED indicates that the power supply is not providing the correct voltage.
  1. make sure if there is a voltage switch on the power supply that it is set to the voltage of your country (120 VAC for North America) maybe cycle the switch from 120 to 240 and back
  2. If the switch is set right and you are using a power strip/battery backup, by pass it and plug directly to the wall.
  3. Make sure the black and yellow 4 pin connector for the processor is connected on the motherboard.
  4. if all the above have no effect, replace the power supply in the tower

try removing the front panel make sure the button isnt clogged with dust or disconected failing that it may well be your power supply internal fuse which can be repaird but a trick job if youare not very good with a soldering iron you may get a replacement one on ebay.

MY COMPUTERS front and back green light is flashing green

you can remove your side cover, and unplug everything from your power supply. then if you plug in your computer and the light still flashes it's your power supply. If not it's something that it is powering. Most likely it's your motherboard. I had this happen to me when there was a power surge/ outage and my computer wasn't even on.

Power button if flashing orange and nothing else works

It's likely that your power supply has started to go out. There are several different leads with varying voltages & amps. If your computer is getting enough power to make a light flash yellow or orange then this often means that there is something wrong with one or more of the voltages from the power supply. Sometimes it means that something is wrong with your motherboard. Like: burned out capacitors, resistors, & etc.

Power button just flashes will no turn off AND nothing on the screen

On back of the computer is a on off switch for the power supply, or unplug the computer for one minute. Turn the switch back on, or plug the computer back in and try to turn it on.

Flash drive not working

An option that you could do is to plug the flash drive in the back of the computer. The reason is because flash drives derive power from the USB port itself unlike other usb devices that you are using may have their own power or because the USB port in front does not give as much power as the one from the back.

Light Bulb Icon Flashing

Unplug it from power.Pull the side cover to check for burnt smell or burnt spots on your board modem or power supply. Unplug the power suppy from the board, unplug the hard drive . Then plug it all up again , put the cover back on it .Plug power cords back up and try it again. If you get no where after this the surge knocked out your power supply or hard drive or board. Always use a good surge protector on all computers and printer and copiers.
