I have same problem. What is "optimal block"?

  • calvito Nov 03, 2008

It started with a blue stain in the lower corner of the screen. Then, blue dots started appearing up the center of the picture. They seem to be multiplying.. Also, the entire picture has a blue tint. Anybody has any ideas??

my parents are having the same blue haze/blue dots problem. They  bought their tv at sears 4 years ago. service is coming out tomorrow to check it out.  I noticed in solutions the fix may be an optical board, passed that on to my dad who plans on talking to sears before they send a repairman out.
will keep you posted on the results. thanks for the insight.

I have the same problem and I looked at Sony's web site. This is a common problem on the grand Wega TV's from 2004. They are offering to cover costs of repair on TV's out of warranty for his problem or offering replacement TV's for greatly reduced prices. Call 1-866-850-8681

You likely have a bad optical block. Sony was supplying the optical block as a warranty repair until June of this year, but that warranty has expired.

I went to this website: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=206&mdl=KDF55WF655
and found my tv was covered under this program. SONY will do one of two things... fix your tv by installing a new light engine/optimal block free of charge, or sell you a new tv a reduced price: KDL-42V4100 for $300 + tax; or KDL-46V4100 for $378 + tax; or KDL-46W4100 for $523 + tax. I bought a new tv (new technology - no light engine/optimal block) as why be potentially faced with same problem a few years from now. SONY gave me absolutely no hassle whatsoever.

NO... More than likely, It is an optical block problem. Sony has had this issue on Many models!!

And has had several Class Actions mediated. I'm not sure if yours has settled yet. http://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/

Check that link and then contact Sony Customer support. They are actually pretty easy to talk to regarding this issue. Hope this helps!

Little blue dots on screen and large blue haze in upper left corn

Sounds like the light engine is going bad...that's why they stopped making these rear projection sets using LCD's. Costs almost as much as a new set! But get a second opinion before trashing it.

This was caused by a defect in the optical block of the TV. It will only get worse with time and the only way to fix it is to replace the whole optical block which is very expensive (over $1000 usually) and time consuming (you need to take the whole TV apart). However, since it was a defect, there was a class action lawsuit that caused Sony to extended the warranties for certain models on the optical block for parts and labor. Call Sony to see if your model was one of the ones they extended the warranty for.

It is light engine that is going bad and causing blue haze/ clouds etc.
It is an expensive part, and I would recommend a new TV instead of its repair.
Thanks.

You have a problem within the light engine. This a hugely expensive. If the set is not too old you could contact Sony and see if they will help you out. Otherwise it is not eceonomical to repair

BLUE HAZE

That could only be the optical block, Sony p/n# A1084662a and heaven help you if it needs to be replaced. It is the single most expensive part of the DLP based projection Tv's costing approximately $900.00 dollars plus core and shipping..
You'll need to take this one to a quality repair center to have it estimated. It may be that they can repair it also - but whatever the case these type of repairs are not cheap.
Please don't kill the messenger...
Good Luck!

Green dot in middile of my screen

The green dot in the center sounds like a burn mark on one or more of the picture tubes inside the set, and the curved lines are telling me that you have a problem in the convergence circuits. The blue haze around everything white tells me you either have a lot of dust build up on the lens over the CRTs, or your picture tube(s) are very weak. If this set is over about 12 years old, I would replace it. I doubt if you will be able to get the green dot out of the picture without changing the tubes which would be VERY expensive.
