Question about Kenmore 62602 Electric Dryer
My dryer starts and heats up fine, but the drum will only turn manually. When turned manually it seems to turn free of resistance and correctly. I have taken the top of the dryer off and the thin belt that runs around the drum seems to be, what I deem as, a bit loose. I would imagine it should be relatively snug to the drum. The belt appears to be intact and in good condition, so I am assuming the belt has somehow come off the pulley connected to the motor. My question is what is the best way to access the motor to confirm this theory. The dryer was given to me by my parents and they no longer have the manual for it, so I don't have much to go off of.
Best way to confirm if it's a belt/pulley problem is to remove one of the access panels on the back of the dryer. For many models, it's on the bottom, right hand side. Open it and look inside. You also use that access panel to put a new belt on since it can be difficult to do from the front, having to reach past the drum. But if everything is intact, then you should be able to "rethread" the belt around the idler pulley and onto the motor pulley.
Here's a common diagram:
If the belt is OK, but came off the pulley, then most likely, your idler pulley has too much play in it or the spring has lost tension and isn't holding it securely. I'd put the belt back on. If it comes off again, then look into replacing the idler pulley and/or spring.
