Problem with picture on playback mode

My husband just brought home a Canon ZR 500 Camcorder. This is my first foray into camcorders so I am sitting here trying to practice with it before I actually need it. I have practised recording which seems to be going okay but when I try to replay what I have taped there are large grey vertical lines in a pattern across the LCD screen and the view finder. The volume plays back fine though. The tape is a new Sony dv-premium tape. I cannot seem to figure this out !

This camera is a pure consumer camera though it can capture prosumer-like videos *some times*. Over all the performance is very satisfactory and it produces wonderful videos in good light conditions. Though the manual focus wheel is tiny and bit awkward to control, it does its job pretty well. The 3 preset zoom speeds are really nice which can produce professional looking zoom in/out. I find the analog to digital option very handy as many of the consumer cameras now-a-days do not have this feature. 1/2.7%u201D CMOS with RGB filter and Canon DIGIC DV II internal algorithm are capable of reproducing vivid picture and real good colour. It is also nice to see that the camera comes with functions like infinity focus, peeking & zebra pattern to assist focus and exposure. The camera uses a more matured HDV technology compared to a relatively new AVCHD technology which is having hitches still %u2013 mainly in compatibility between manufactures.

Hi,

Initially would suggest you try head cleaning. There are mini cassette tape cleaners that would fit your particular model. Alternately, pls check if you have a "Tracking" control.

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

How can i download the contents of my mini tape onto the pc ?

you don't convert the files, you just downlod them via a firewire comnnection.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder....
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
Open your editing program and choose the capture mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection....

thanks.

Sony HD videos Review:Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 and HDR-CX110

Camcorders and cameras could be the electronic devices that you would never get rid of. There are special events and memorial moments like wedding, sports, birthday party, a long trip in South Africa and so on.

While choosing a camcorder with less than $500 bucks, what models would you consider? There are popular brands like Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Canon.
Each manufacture promotes products with different attractive points. Here I would like to take a look at two new release Sony camcorders, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 and Sony Handycam HDR-CX110, for entry-level consumers as examples.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 could be taken as one of the ultra-compact camcorders with the light weight, while Sony Handycam HDR-CX110 is general camcorder. Both AVCHD camcorders are wonderful with HD recording at 1920x1080, and there are bundled tools for some camcorders. However, the Mac version of PMB portable only seems to support Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 now, and there is no news for Sony HDR-CX110 yet. To make full use of AVCHD camcorder, you can use AVCHD MTS/M2TS converter for easy video editing and importing to software like Adobe Premiere, Avid.
Let's have a look at the comparison chart for the two models:

Even though Sony HDR-CX110 is more expensive and larger than a mini-camcorder, this model includes a 25x zoom lens for better video and picture. However, Cyber-shot also includes higher effective sensor resolution to 10.2 megapixels. The AVCHD videos with MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video codec provide high quality. Since the videos are recorded with interlace, while playing AVCHD MTS/M2TS videos on computer, you shall remember to deinteralce .mts for smooth playback.
If your eye is not that critical for images, the two models Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 and HDR-CX110 could be your first camcorder for HD video. If you are looking for a higher quality camcorder, a higher cost will be ready for around a thousand bucks like Sony Handycam HDR-XR520V, HDR-CX550V, Canon Vixia HV30 or other AVCHD camcorders. Fortunately, the AVCHD camera MTS converter from Aunsoft Studio supports the AVCHD camcorders listed above, and you can play and edit HD videos on both Windows and Mac.

I need more information to help with this problem. What model is the camera? Is it a single-lens reflex camera, or a camcorder? The more details I can get, the better I will be able to research and recommend solutions. Thanks.

Can't take pictures

Defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
