I/O ERROR 1785

I have a Compaq Presario 5240 that originally had Windows 98. I recently installed XP Professsional.

I am using this computer to write and I am writing using Movie Magic Screenwriter software. I write on a disk, but whenever I attempt to save
my work, I get a pop up box that says: Disk not properly formatted. I/O ERROR 1785.

Please let me know how I might correct this error.

Thank you.

All the best,

Everette

This is Everette with the same I/O ERROR 1785.
I am now writing to say that I do have a FAT hard drive.
Is there another reason that the I/O Error persists?
I cannot save any of my work.

    Please give me another solution.

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Everette

Error message while tryinh to instal broadband says 'No NIC has been installed on this sytem'. working with rather old Compaq Presario S0000

You need to update your drivers for your ethernet card. You can try running Windows Update to find it, or you can search for it on Compaq's website.

To run Windows Update: Go to your start menu and find "Windows Update". Click on it and do everything it asks you to do. If it asks you if you want to run Windows Update Express or Custom, pick CUSTOM. This will take a while. When it is done it should show you many, many updates available. Make sure to click "Hardware" on the left side under optional updates. This will usually have the drivers for your Sound and many other items. Check them all then "Review and Install Updates". Good luck!

The error message is correct. Windows 7 is not backwards compatible with certain graphics adapters requiring DirectX support higher than 8.0.
You should attempt first to install the proper driver for your graphics adapter from the manufacturer, and if that does not fix the issue, you should either install a new graphics adapter, or revert back to Windows XP.
