If the ethernet card on your computer is built in meaning it came with the mother or its not an epansion card conencted to a PCI slot on your computer and its already bad, the best thing to do here is to get a new Ethernet card that will be connected to a PCI slot of your computer you can check this model number from Linksys LNE100TX or NC1oo ethernet card are not expensive so you can just go and get a new one...

I don't know this device but it maybe set to WiFi when you are on Ethrenet cable. Go into it's settings and make sure it's set to Ethernet not WiFi and DHCP for it's IP address.

I need to connect to wifi using a dongal

is this a question or a statement?

I once used a wireless to wired ethernet dongal to hook up a tivo to trick it into thinking it had a wired connection because it wouldn't stream saved content to the sub-boxes in a total home dvr setup over the wireless.

It worked, true story!

I have two problems. there is a three second lag fom the computer to the dlink wich makes watching video frustrating. the other is the ball on the remote has stopped working

The video problems are generally bandwidth problems.
First, on your laptop set the 802.11g adapter settings as follows. I found an obscure section in the DPG-1200 software help index where they define settings for your 802.11g adapter, and these make a big difference.

Transmit power = highest
wireless mode = 802.11g
throughput enhancement = enabled.
roaming aggressiveness = Lowest
Ad Hoc Power Management = Disabled
Turn off the ability of the computer to turn off this device to save power.
This can be enough. Remember to press the green button to put your laptop in "Video" mode when playing video. Won't work properly otherwise (is a lower resolution).
If you still have problems then you need to increase your bandwidth on your laptop. Plug it into an ethernet (that worked for me). I also have an 802.11n adapter on order which should work too.
As for your ball issue. Reset everything and the connection. If that doesn't fix it, you need a new remote.

Hi, you need to connect to the router using an ethernet cable, and not in wireless mode.
If you are using wireless, that can be the cause of the problem.

Disable all firewalls on the computer you are using. Also firewalls can block the network.

If it still does not work it Depends on Fortec, in some way they are cutting you out from the network. Ensure that you are entitled to download codes, it looks like their server is cutting out your IP right after you connect to the network.

First ensure that you are entitled to download codes if you are not this can be normal, after a while they can spot and block an IP. Give them a call to ensure it is not that your IP had been blocked.

If your account is fine, try updating receiver firmware.
Here is the download page

I cannot figure how to set up to cable internet

You need a TIVO wireless adaptor or a USB ethernet adaptor to connect to the internet on some models unless your model have an ethernet adaptor attached to it

From your Tivo go into the setting menu and look for network setup. Tivo will connect to the network and download the schedule.

Once you get that hooked up download Tivo Desktop from Tivo.com. There is a free version of the program. Give the software your IP address on the network for your computer if you know it and see if the software detects it on your network.

It sucks that you can't dial in anymore, but if you have broadband internet there is an easy solution. You can buy for about $20 on Newegg a LiInksys USB200M USB ethernet adapter that allows your Tivo to connect to the Tivo service using your broadband internet. If you modem is in fact dead, this may be the only chance you have at getting Tivo to connect again. I have 2 SD-H400 and I don't (and have never) use the telephone line. I use the broadband connection only and have never had a problem.

Even if you don't have broadband you can get this to work with the USB200M and dial up too. You'll have to connect to your dial up provider using your PC, then set your PC up to use Windows built in "Internet Connection Sharing". You then connect your Tivo to you PC using an ethernet cable. If the cable goes directly from the Tivo to the PC, you'll need a crosswired or crossover ethernet cable. If you have a network switch or network hub in between, you can use a regular network cable. Use your Tivo menus to "Connect to the Tivo Service Now" and it should connect and get any Guide or Software Updates that are available. Keep in mind this will be painfully slow as dial up internet is much slower than broadband.

This problem could also be caused by a recent switch in telephone connection. If you are now using a Voice Over IP (VOIP) telephone, I don't think Tivo will connect with that type of phone line. You're only option then will be the USB200M and some type of network connection to the internet.

Is your receiver directly connected to your router via ethernet cable or are you trying to connect wirelessly? If wirelessly its probably your security settings at fault.

if via wire, it looks like you typo'd the gateway. an internal IP address will usually start with "192" not "92".
