Acer Aspire L100 heat problem

Back at the end of Sept, you posted:

"I have a solution for L100 heat problem. My idling temps before fix 55 to 65 cel. After fix 33 to 35 cel. If anyone is interested I will post step by step fix."

My L100 is completely dead and I am wondering if I might be able to resurrect it. I'd love to know what you did

Go into the BIOS and disable the smart fan. The next boot will allow the fan to run at full speed, approx 7200rpm instead of 2800 rpm and the machine will not overheat. However, its will sound like an aircraft on takeoff!

I have an Acer L100 and have sorted the problem completely.
Please be aware that there is ONE fan and it sucks air INTO the computer which then exits through the grilles.
However I have used a number of fixes and I can't be sure which are the best ones. In order of effectiveness by my reckoning though are:-
    1) In the BIOS turn off the Fan Control.( In System Health) Noisy but immediately solves the overheating problem. Fan now runs at 7200 rpm instead of 2800 rpm.Cost £0
    2) Changed AMD X2 3800 65W ( 2.0GHz) Processor for a 5050e 45W ( 2.6GHz). Cost £55 ( Latest equivalents are XII 240e 2.8Ghz etc)
    3) Cut/drill a couple of small holes in the front left grille in front of the hard drive so air can exit. Cost £0
    4) Switch the hard drive for a 2.5" SATA unit. Cost approx £35.

    5) As the machine was now running almost at room temperature, I swopped the fan for a slower unit that ran at 5000 rpm and made less noise. Speed fan is actually trying to slow the fan down but can't as it is a 3 wire fan, not the original 4 wire.

All these changes combined have given me a machine where 2 of the 7 or so temperatures on Speedfan are about normal while the rest are cooler than normal. The hottest I see is 44C on one of the MB chips.

    I hope this helps .

I reset my surge protector and the computer wont power up. i think i need a new power supply. the power cord is working fine. Please let me know where i can find a power supply for the aspire...

The Acer Aspire L100 is a desktop computer powered by a special DC adapter and power cable. The computer's motherboard incorporates a fuse designed to prevent any power surges from damaging the computer. If the fuse burns out due to a power surge or for any other reason, the computer will no longer function. You can check the motherboard fuse for damage yourself, then take it to a trained technician for replacement if needed

Shut down the Acer Aspire L100 and turn the tower around.

Press the "On/Off" button on the front of the tower. If the computer will not boot and the fan does not turn on, the fuse may be burned out.

Unplug the power cord from the rear of the tower

Turn the tower on its side and remove the Phillips-head screws connecting the back panel to the Aspire L100's cabinet.

Pull out the motherboard assembly gently from the back of the cabinet. The internal fuse is located on the motherboard behind the DC power jack, which is to the right of the monitor jack

Let me know if this helped..

Forgot Acer Aspire L100 BIOS master password. Used "cmospwd /k" to remove password, but power was cut accidentally. Now, machine starts POST (keyboard lights flash), but there is no display.

In cas eof forgot password of bios you must follow the following steps
    • open the cabinet and look for the bios on the corner
    • there u would find a pin which is fixed on the side of BIOS take the pin out and put it in the next two pins and again fix it at the original p
Now your BIOS password is reset and u can access your pc

You could try a new cpu fan and heatsink. They are normally inexpensive. if this does not work make sure all the case fans are working and check to see if your ram is overheating

Go back to Acer.com. The driver you want is the one that say's (Power 1000 chipset driver) that is if it's an integrated Network card. If it's not integrated then I would need the name on the card. Hope this helps.
