Question about Gateway PC Desktops

1 Answer

I bought my modem at my local walmart in August of 08. Now the modem cannot detect a dial tone. I have had it at two different houses to make sure that it's not my phone line and it is still the same. I have talked to 3 different people at gateway trying to get it fixed. I am on dial up service and because I live in the mountains and can't get good cell phone service, the call kept getting dropped. I've went through the properties thing and it hasn't helped. The last man I talked to said the modem may be bad. and then the call got dropped. I need to talk to someone that can fix it or get my money back.

I took the modem back to walmart . They said I only had fifteen days to return it to their service dept. Well it's been more than that. So they can't help me. The model # is emachines W3650 and the serial # is CGM84 100 15631.

well..that means you will need to speak to walmart..we do not handle their customer service information..and we would need the model of the modem at any rate to suggest some options.

You might need to contact a computer technician because if it has no dial tone means, your are not installing the modem correclty (if modem is good).

I have an ATXSTF OXN Gateway that was used for dial up. I have ATT Uverse.I can't seem to switch it over. It keeps saying that it can't find a dial tone. Can you suggest how to switch it?

Not sure, but consider it just like a regular land line phone. So connect the line to the modem and plug a phone to the line port. You should get dial tone. The modem may need to re-seated or re-installed if there is no dial tone.

Modem says no dial tone detected

Good morning! It's common to a Dial-Up connection to drop the line during session as signal strength is going low eventhough modem is working properly. Please try to use DSL / Broadband connection as signal strength is 1Mbps or greater. best regards.

Was able to get connected to the internet twice to day when i came back in to get on the computer it couldnt connect to the internet said no dial tone. this is a new dell computer with an external modem...

Generally this is an indication of a modem failure. If there have been any storms in your area, then the modem may have been zapped. The dial tone curcuit is normally the first casualty when a modem gets hit with more power than normal.

Provided that your telephone is functional on that line (Unplug modem, and connect a handset if this is a modem only line and see if the handset gets a dial tone, this is a good check to make sure the line is functional)

My modem cannot detect a dial tone.ihave tried six times on the phone toget this fixed. bought in aug.2008,have taken thecomputer to two places other than my home, and i have the same problem there...

Is the modem detected on the computer? Go into the device manager by right clicking "My Computer" and click "Properties". Then click "Device Manager". Make sure there is an item named "Modems" listed. Click the + sign next to "Modems". Your modem model should be listed there.

If it isn't listed your computer has not recognized it. You will need to reload the driver for it.

If it is there, right click on the modem name and select "Properties". There should be a "Troubleshoot" button to aid in finding the problem.

When I tried to go online my Compaq Presario SR110nx gave error 680

Error 680--- No dial tone
A) Test modem by dialling a number through HyperTerminal or phone dialler. This will test the Modem without using Dialup Networking.
B) Make sure you are using the correct and/or original cable. Some modems used specific wiring which is not compatible with standard modem cables.
C) Check that you phone line is working with a normal phone.
D) Make sure the phone line you are trying to dial on is not a non-standard line, this can cause problems also.
E) If all the above are OK then get a new modem or test in a different location.

Won't connect to the Internet

If you are using a dialup connection, the ethernet connection would not have anything to do with your problem. Be sure the cable is plugged into the line socket. Take a repular phone and plug it into the telephone socket on the computer and see if you get a dial tone. Be sure you have entered the number correctly including a 1 and area code if required. You may want to call the number your computer is trying to call to see if you hear modem tones ( to be sure the number is correct). If all that is in order, your friends are probably right and your modem is bad. It may be covered under warranty.

Thanks, I'll call my old ISP!

Your ISP's proprietary software should detect whether your modem is getting dial tone or not, so that's how I would check the modem. Another way to test the modems connectivity would be to connect an active phone line to the in port and a landline phone to the out port and see if the phone gets dial tone?

I don't think you need to worry about disabling your network connections as there should be no conflict especially since you have no network cable attached (your ethernet/networking card will sense a connection or not).

Keep me posted.
