I just bought a 2003 Chevy Malibu. The gas gauge always reads empty. The low fuel light is on. The fuel pump was just changed. Any ideas?

I filled the tank. The gas guage hasn't moved once and I put 200 miles on the vehicle.

How much did it cost to repair?

Need to replace the sensor inside the gas tank. I have a 2008 Malibu with the same problem. It was a faulty fuel gauge sensor.

It cost me $468.00 at the Chevy dealership. The sensor is inside the gas tank. So the whole tank needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: Where does the flasher go on a 98 chevy malibu

Replacement The turn and hazard flashers are integrated into one flasher on these models. The flasher is located in the hazard warning switch and the hazard warning switch is located on the trim plate. Replace the flasher by unplugging the old one, removing it from the panel, and plugging in the new one.

  1. Remove the bezel from the ignition switch.

SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Malibu. ABS light

The abs light will reset every time the vehicle is shut off. The most common cause of the abs light coming on is a bad wheel speed sensor. A scan tool would be the option to locate the fault in the abs system.

How do you fix the gas gauge? It won't read anything and it looks like it's on empty!

Courtney, Check the fuse first for the gage, if blown, replace. The gas tank will probably have to be taken out of vehicle to change the fuel sending unit. 1st Link shows how to test, other links will show replacement procedures.

2005 Chevy Malibu the gas guage has stopped working. The guage will go from full to empty over and over. The gas cap light comes on and now my engine light is on constantly. How do I get this fixed for...

hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful

My 2008 chevy malibu fuel gauge dose not read only some times when its a full tank the gauge is dead but about 1/4 tank it reads but gos in and out ?

this is caused by a defective gas gage sending unit, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump module inside the gas tank, the gas tank must be removed to replace the fuel pump module that also contains the sending unit.

P0171 and p0463

Replace the fuel pump module (inside the fuel tank) it has 2 level sensors on it. The po463 code is an open condition on the high level sensor, one sensor reports to the ECM, other to your gas gauge on the dash.
