Re: compaq presario 1200

I had the same problem with my presario 1200. The problem was not the screws- the pieces in the hinge that stiffen the hinge had cracked and I had to buy new hinges off ebay.

Re: compaq presario 1200

There are plastic covers over the hinges, which may be part of the faceplate. being a compaq the hinge screws are most likely torx head screws. compaq used to make a special tool for removing the plastic covers on their laptops. the tool was a bar with a piece of fiberglas circuit board embedded in it. you insert the circuit board into the groove between the top and bottom covers and twist. this is, of course after removing all of the cover screws. some of the cover screws on the display may be hidden under rubber bumpers.

Re: compaq presario 1200

Could be the hinges (which I've seen), could be the LCD back lid (which I've seen), could also include the LCD front frame as collateral damage (which I've seen), and ... could also be the bottom case where the long screws for the hinges bolt on to (which I've seen). I'd assign equal percentages to all 4 areas - they all enjoy breaking.

'Course, worst case scenario (which I've been thru) is that everything is broken (both hinges, lcd back lid, lcd front frame, and lower case). Ouch!

Bottom line is, there's no guessing on this one - you really gotta take it apart to find out which parts are broken, and I can almost guarantee you there'll be more than one. The trouble is: once you take it apart, you may not be able to put it back together again since multiple parts are broken.

These Cpq Presario's have been the most troublesome laptops I've ever dealt with.

The screen is floppy on my Compaq Presario CQ70 and needs tightening can you inform me on how I can resolve this please ?

Check the screen mounting screws on the back of the laptop near the hinges, make sure they are tight.
If these screws ar tight and the screen is loose then the hinges need to be replaces because there are no adjustments available to tighten them.
Replacement hinges may be available from one of these WEB sites.

How to remove the screen of compaq presario cqm60

Basically the LCD screen is attached to the bottom of the laptop by the hinges. This may require the keyboard to be removed to get access to the LCD connector to the motherboard. The hinges may also be secured by screws at the back of the laptop.

The screen on my laptop is not tight enough. When I open my laptop, the screen will only go so far before it falls all the way back. Is there a way to fix this problem?

The hinges on these presarios attach in different ways. On some there are two screws, one on each side that screws up through the bottom and into the bottom portion of the hinge. Then, the other screws are under the power trim piece. In some cases this can just be pried off carefully, but on other models, there are a series of screws inder the battery and that needs to be removed first. Write back with an exact model number and I can pull up a guide for you., The other screws that will need to be tightened are the ones behind the bezel of the LCD.

How to tighten screen

You're wanting to tighten the hinges for the screen. Either tighten them so the screen will stay in the position you set it at, or tighten the hinges from being loose in the body of the laptop.

The link below takes you to,>Manuals, and the download page for the Maintenance and Service Guide.

Don't let the name 'Guide' fool you. This is an extensive service manual! It is a free download from
This is a PDF file. Your computer has Adobe Reader on it. It uses PDF files.

On the page link above, go down to -> HP Pavilion ze2000 Notebook PC, Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide <- in blue, and click on it. (Either one. I would click on the one that is 4.75MB in size)

After you click on it, you may not see anything happening. It's downloading. You may not see anything for 30 seconds or more.
Sometimes after about 10 seconds, the first page pops up. It's still downloading though!
Let it FULLY download before you start looking through it. If you don't, you could break the download connection.

Should you wish to save a copy, of this service manual to your computer, (So you can look at it anytime you want, or burn it off to CD disk), go up to the headings at the top.
Click on the second icon from the left. It's a Floppy disk icon.
Hovering your mouse cursor over it, will briefly reveal,
"Click to save this file to your computer or another location".

Unless you have your computer set to download to your My Documents folder, this file will be saved to your desktop screen.
It will be a yellow folder with -> c00637377.pdf <- under it.
Just double-click on it to view.
(I downloaded it just now, and it took 28 seconds to come up. I have a medium speed DSL connection)

Page 129 starts with dealing with the Display. (LCD screen and hinges)

If you get time, I would appreciate it if you would rate this solution.

Display Problem Black turns Red

sounds like you have a loose connection ....either into the screen or into the motherboard....the connection between board and screen runs through the hinge brackets and often comes loose after machine has been opened and closed a lot.....need to be comfortable opening up laptops to check the cables as it can be tricky to get to the back of the screen where the end of the ribbon cable is..

Need to replace screen and casing on compaq presario 1200 - instructions?

Here is the closest thing I could find to actual disassembly instructions. There is one document for LCD hinges on the 1200 I think ...that might get you pointed in the right direction.

Please be aware that my recommendations are to have a professional attempt this. The wrong screw or the wrong tool put into the wrong place will mess up a lot more thank your LCD.

Also be aware that I do not personally endores or recommend following these instructions ...I just found them for you - do what you want with the information :)

hope this helps - please remember to rate :)

Compaq Presario V4000 (v4118AP) right hinge broken

I had the same problem, they are very easy to fix, I did a search earliar and found some on the link below.

You do not need to dismantle to base, you have some star screws under the battary and one either side that loosens the small panel near the screen (where the power button is). The screen cover has screws under the plastic covers then just unclips, be gentle. after that it is self evident
