If it load only with one of the two modules, than one of the modules is faulty. A faulty RAM module sometimes may only work along, you get this when you have problems related to memory random access on one module.

1GB RAM is not expensive nowadays, get a pair of new modules, that is what would have been done in a workshop.

if your computer is running with one memory and it works with no problems then just use one memory. if your computer needs to have more memory because its lacking of it then add one. just be sure that the previous memory is the same as the memory that youll be going to buy. because if your going to buy a new memory with high specs or different than the older one it may have a conflict. hope that helps!

    thank you for using fixya

Can you please provide more specific information? You can try re inserting the card into the slot. If there are two slots, try interchanging it.

if u get the loading error in the startup of your PC then try this..

Remove all the cables connected to motherboard means sata cable, ide cable floppy cable and then start the computer and then go to the bios options and afterwards connected devices one by one and finally try to find what ha been causing the problem. at times the problem may not be on ur motherboard but maybe one of your devices.

Yes it should boot even with one Memory module make sure you buy the RAM that is compatible to your motherboard if your motherboard requires a Double sided RAM or a singlesided RAM because they are different better check it on your motherboards manual......

What memory do I need?

Your machine has 4 DIMM slots. They use PC3200 (DDR400) DIMMS (184-pin). The machine comes pre-installed with 2, 256MB DIMMS providing 512MB of RAM. The largest DIMMs available in the DDR PC3200 are 1GB. If you keep what you have, you can add an additional 2GB of RAM, for a total of 2.5GB. If you are running WINXP 32-bit, this should be more than acceptable. You can replace all four DIMMS and get 4GB of RAM, but a 32-bit OS can only access a little of 3GB of RAM. If you want to come close to maxing out under a 32-bit OS, remove one of the installed DIMMS and add 3 1GB DIMMS. These are old memory and may be hard to find and actually cost more than newer memory.

What is the max ram speed my pc can take

According to some research, your desktop has 4 RAM slots available. The total maximum RAM your desktop can hold is 2GB (2048MB). Furthermore, each slot can hold a maximum of 1GB (1024) but cannot exceed the 2GB total.
This means you can theoretically install 2 x 1GB RAM DIMMS in 2 RAM slots or 4 x 512MB RAM DIMMS. Both will meet the desktops 2GB limitation.
The RAM specifications for your desktop are as follows:
RAM Limit: 2GB (2048MB) RAM Slot Type: SO-DIMM RAM Type: DDR1 (not DDR2 or DDR3) RAM Speed: PC3200/DDR400 ECC Type: Non-ECC
TIP: The RAM is DDR which means that while you can install them as singles (single-channel mode), the system will see a speed benefit from installing them as matched pairs (dual-channel mode).

Can I add 1GB memory chip in 2nd slot with a 512MB chip in 1st?

You can upgrade by inserting a 1GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM DIMM. I would put the 1MB in the first slot and move the 512MB chip to the second slot.
The 1GB should cost around $40.

New ram not speedy

well, the lowest speed of those rams will be effective for all rams. If you install same sized ram on 1st and the 3rd port, it should be run on dual channel mode and will be fastest possible. please try this if you have 4 ports.

I need to replace the Hard drive and RAM in my ACER Aspire T120E - 8870 but am unsure of which type of each to buy. I can't find anything about it on the internet, please help.

The aspire uses the normal DIMM modules
    512MB 184pin PC3200 DDR DIMM.
    1GB 184pin PC3200 DDR400 2.5V nonECC nonRegistered low profile DIMM.

And you can plug in and IDE Harddrive upto make 160 GB on this system , for a bigger hdd . you would either need windows xp service pack 2 or the drivers from the manufacturer
