Hi,

Your post "backing up" could be interpreted a couple of ways:

  • copy selected / specific document, images, music, video and other user files;
  • copy the entire system as in a clone of the original;
  • copy the system for migration to a new machine.
Whatever the purpose is then, "backing up" would also depend on to where are you backing it up:
  • CD/DVD;
  • external USB Mass Storage Device;
  • internally within the same hard drive.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back
  • your Operating System;
  • specification of what it is you want to back up;
  • where it is you want to save your backup;
  • how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    another possibility is that the external mass storage device is no longer being recognized by the USB port of the PC.

    as you may expect this is not a fully interactive approach. so , with that, what is your situation there? I am signing off for the night(it is almost 11 pm here in Euroland) so, more on this in the morning.

I am having a very strange problem with my Windows 10 Desktop PC with renaming

Windows 10 is new and still in testing phase, new patches are released to fix bugs almost everyday. try running an update, make sure your hardware was compatible and the OS is installed properly, you do have the option to roll back if you want to.

Will i loose pictures & other files if i format my pc

Yes you will lose all files when you format.
If you want to save your files but cannot open Windows on your computer then remove the hard drive from your computer and connect this hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter. Plug this adapter and hard drive into the USB port of a working computer, this computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the folders on this drive and copy/backup the various folders and files.
After you have copied/backup your files, you can install the hard drive back into your computer to format and reinstall Windows.

I have an emachines computer with vista...need to restore it back to factory settings, however, i cannot find the emachines program file in my start menu...any suggestions?

If you notice your disk drive having a partition for recovery, you may have an option to do system recovery from boot up.

Most desktops have this option during the boot up process. So before windows logo appears on Startup, press F11 key.

This procedure will restore your computer's system from the very first time you used it. So, better back up all the important files and documents before doing this.

It sounds like your external hard drive went belly up unfortunately. Unless you backed up your files to another location (remember, backing up means having your files on 2 or more locations, not just "keeping them" on an external drive).

Computer Disc won't restore

I would try backing up all your valuable info and try scan disk in safe mode.  If scan disk fails perhaps try a different hard drive, if not then try reinstalling windows and starting fresh.  Is this the disc that came with the computer or one that was made?
