On a little 5k BTU window AC, it's not blowing cold air consistently. I'm told this may be a simple thermostat issue but how do I check it? What would I be looking for?

if it was cold all the time it would freeze up,it is normal, stop listening to others, you might need a bigger one if it cant cool the whole place,5000 btu is only good for a small bedroom

Coleman Heat Pump Freezes Up

This sounds like an airflow problem. You said you change the filters every 3 weeks or so. Check the filters and the indoor coil to make sure they are clean. Also look at the indoor fan and make sure it is running and running at speed. A fan that isn't running at the rated speed will cause the coil to freeze. A weak capacitor can make the fan run slow. Also make sure the fan blade/wheel is clean. A low refrigerant charge will also cause the unit to freeze. It doesn't matter what you have the thermostat set on because the temperature of the refrigerant is determined by the pressure of the refrigerant and the airflow across the coils. If it freezes up again you can put it in heat mode to melt the ice.

Air compressor keeps freezing up...copper line had been without insulation until yesterday, but this didnt fix the problem. Unit is a 2 year old Goodman

The thermostate is not working properly, thermostat sense the temperature of the sitting and it work like a switch cutting compressor on and off. When the thermostate sense the correct sitting of the temperature and it suppose to cut off compressor to allow the evaporator to warm up a little if the thermostat switch is faulty and it does not recognize the temperature although it will keep the compressor running until it freezes up just like froze water stuck in the line.

Neither Roof Air Works

Yes and no .. Freezing temps should not affect your A/C at all ... BUT .. there is a freeze control box, its called a control unit to prevent itself from freezing up and burning out, take down the lower cover and you will see it. Your problem is more likely to be more central since neither are working Thermostat or even the control box's in genera, even could be a freon problem if the cold weather was really bad and you could have a leak on your lines, check it out and see what you got!

check your thermostat, could be set to the coldest setting and it is not cutting off.
thermostat could be broken also( stuck close)
the evaporator coil could be clogged with dirt. have it clean.

Window unit ac/heat

Are the coils freezing up half way down or all the way up? Half-ways down means low on freon, all the way up, mean low air flow, due to dirty filter, and adjust the thermostat up a little higher, it could be going out also.

American Standard Heat/ac system

It has been suggested to us we change out the thermostat.Good idea considering if the ifs its reading colder than actually appears on readout the unit will freeze up. The unit is working right at this moment, but, when we change thermostats we will let you know the outcome.

Samsung window unit air conditioner model # AW2402M freezes up one time, and the next time freezes you out of the room. What is wrong with it, Termistat or compressor?

Try to set the thermostat to higher temperature and monitor if the compressor will turn " off " when the room temp. is cool, and turn " on " when the room temp. is high. If does not work then your thermostat is defective. Continue running of compressor with very cold room temp. can build up ice in the unit. The compressora73b784.jpg should shutdown when setting temp. will attain.
