You need to find your sound device in your labtop.
Then find the driver online and install it for that device you have.
If that doesn't work then you can buy an external usb soundcard adapter such as

I want to set the receiver to surround sound. The indicator only shows two speakers I want it to show five

What is the source of your sound? By default, receiver will use only those channels that are used in the input signal - if you play CD in stereto, it will use only 2 front speakers. If you play DVD with 5.1 audio, it will use all 5 speakers (+ subwoofer if you have one).

However you can use one of the bulitin "sound field program" modes to mix the 2 channel stereo music to all speakers. On front panel, press "PROGRAM < >" buttons to select the one you like. Or on remote control, repeately press MOVIE, MUSIC or STEREO buttons. You can check your manual for description of each sound field program.

So what are we dealing with - the CD player or the Receiver?

901 involvement implies you have an Active Equalizer somewhere in the audio path. IT has buttons on it that can interrupt the signal.

What's connected where, exactly?

It sounds like you digital assignments are either hosed or not working. Most AV receivers will TRY the digital path first and drop to an analog path if the bitstream is absent or corrupt. Upon restortation it might switch back automatically.

Treat it like a new installation and thumb through the manual and settings.

Try really uninstalling the audio device first, then reboot and install. Sometimes a driver reinstall or update fails if you don't uninstall it.

Are you certain that you have the right drivers?
