Your friend probably reformatted your hard drive to NTFS when he installed XP. Windows 98 does not know what to do with NTFS. You will need to delete the current partition on the hard drive, create a new one and then format it with FAT32. Boot to the Windows 98 installation floppy and then type fdisk and follow the instructions - you want to delete the partition, create a new one and then format.

If you do not have the floppy, you can download one from here:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

P.S. I hope you backed up everthing you want to keep because this will wipe it off your hard drive.

Have you tried booting the system with the restore disk, well it should reformat the system before it installs a fresh copy of windows 98 so you should back-up data before proceeding and check the boot sequence in your bios, set the first boot device to CD/DVD.

I hope this helps:)

Win 98 recovery used instead of win xp sp2. computer won't start, shows win 98 screen and stops

win XP will not use anything from a win98 program. If XP is installed you must either use the recovery discs or better, the original XP disc.

You need to "Slipstream" the drivers into the install and burn a DVD, and use that have a look at this link, to give you the idea.

I have a windows 98 system bios and i wish to Put a differnt Hard drive in that has windows xp on it . Is there a way to do this

Hi
It probably won't work. Win 98 machines not only had older BIOS but also the processor was older and most importantly the video was older. XP may just not be able to recognize these parts. In my lab I use an old Dell laptop that was made specifically for Win 98. I was able to install XP but the graphics stay in four color mode as there were no drivers ever written for XP. Also the hard drive with XP was probably formated using NTFS while Windows 98 (unless modified) only recognizes FAT. Good luck and sorry

hi! there, set up exe. that was when your setting up win 98 you have to install that came from floppy disk before you can install win 98.there is an os win 98 in your system you have to delete that previous os before installing another win xp.restart ur computer. press F2 to open your bios set-up . then select bios set-up priority your cd-room drive second, your hard drive. last, quit and save set-up. and then your computer will restart. insert your cd windows xp then reinstall your window xp. delete the previous os then follow the set up on your window xp until you install your new window xp.

Big problem no windows 98 un-locking Key

if the windows xp isn't an upgrade from 98 then it will install on your computer over the 98 without problem, bearing in mind that all information on the disk will be lost once you format it with the disk, but if it's an upgrade disk you might have to check with your friends to see if they have the same version of 98, the other thing if the computer came with 98 installed the product key should be on the case on the back or the side is normal postioning for this altho some techs use to put in the inside of the case.
hope this helps.

I originally purchased a Compaq Presario Pc and received a Disc for the game Recoil which I was able to play successfully, my computer came with Windows 98 installed on it. I then purchased Windows XL...

You game's software is not compatible with XP, it was designed for 98. That is what your saying correct, you installed Windows XP not XL?

Windows

You probably dont have Win XP in twice. You may have a reference to 2 WIN XPs when you start your computer. Your boot.ini can be edited to show just 1 WIN XP.

Here is how to edit it...Be careful how you change it, because if it is done wrong you will have to re-install your whole OS.

You have done big mistake that's why you are getting problem.

1)Regarding installation of win XP over windows vista.
You have to install first lower version and then higher version i.e. you should install first win xp and then windows vista. But vice-versa you can't do it.
So my suggestion is that format your c drive then install win XP
after installation win XP install win vista.

2) which operation system do you want to open .
You can remove it using windows tweak utility software wich is freely available on most of the website. Also you can manually edit it.
For manually do this.( i m not sure about windows vista it is available or not)
right click on my computer->click on Advanced Tab->setup and recovery framework click on settings->click on Edit button
You will see the boot.ini file. You can remove the windows XP line from that file.
