Question about D-Link AirPlus DI-524 Wireless Router

1 Answer

DI-524 I have had this router for several years without problems. Out of nowhere, my TiVo (wireless DWL-122) topped loading program information. I have rebooted everything & now the power light comes on steady as does the WLAN. The WAN is constantly fluttering and the #2 port light is sometimes steady & then flutters.

I have had this same problem. my fix was the tivo, not the dlink. try plugging in your wireless adapter for your tivo into the other usb port. i have to switch mine every 6 months or so.

How do I set security on my DWL-952

There are 2 possible areas raised by this question. The first is a security patch needed to fix the firmware of your router, which by the way is not dwl-952. Your router is a di 954. Dwl 952 is a bundled router and network interface. The details of the firmware update are below.

Security patch for your D-Link router
These firmware updates address the security vulnerabilities in affected D-Link routers. D-Link will update this continually and we strongly recommend all users to install the relevant updates.
As there are different hardware revisions on our products, please check this on your device before downloading the correct corresponding firmware update. The hardware revision information can usually be found on the product label on the underside of the product next to the serial number. Alternatively, they can also be found on the device web configuration.
Please make sure you follow the firmware install guide provided within the ZIP firmware package.
DI-524 Revision E1/E3Thu, 28/11/13
The new firmware 5.13b01 that fixes the security vulnerabilities
DI-524 Revision Ex 5.13b01
Please note: please unzip the file and use the file DI524Ex_FW513B01.bin to update firmware.
DI-524UP Revision A1/A2Thu, 28/11/13
The new firmware 1.08b02 that fixes the security vulnerabilities
DI-524UP Revision Ax 1.08b02
Please note: please unzip the file and use the file DI524UPAx_FW108B02.bix to update firmware.

The second possibility is to set the local security on your network.

From the wikipedia page:
Wireless security is the prevention of unauthorized access or damage to computers using wireless networks. The most common types of wireless security are Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA). WEP is a notoriously weak security standard. The password it uses can often be cracked in a few minutes with a basic laptop computer and widely available software tools. WEP is an old IEEE 802.11 standard from 1999 which was outdated in 2003 by WPA or Wi-Fi Protected Access. WPA was a quick alternative to improve security over WEP. The current standard is WPA2; some hardware cannot support WPA2 without firmware upgrade or replacement. WPA2 uses an encryption device which encrypts the network with a 256 bit key; the longer key length improves security over WEP.

Log in to your router and find the wireless security section. Set up the security model that best suits your needs and then set up your wireless network card with the same information.

Can not open wizard

You can reset your router.

To reset your router, use the following steps (from http://technicallyeasy.net/2008/02/how-to-reset-d-link-di-524-wireless/):

  1. Press the reset button [the tiny button on the back of your router, marked Reset] for 10 seconds. You can use a small object, such as a paper clip to hold down the button.
  2. Do not power off the unit while the router is being reset.
The unit should now reboot, and once the WLAN light stops blinking the router should be reset.
  3. Open up your Web browser and enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
  4. For the login, enter admin as the ID and leave the password blank.
The router has now been reset. Follow the steps in Securing D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router to secure your router.

DI-524 status problem

Did this happen after a firmware upgrade? If so, this link may help:

http://borgetech.blogspot.com/2007/09/d-link-di-524-revision-b4-status-light.html

Apparently there's a utility which will force firmware to load on the router. The steps are a bit technical, though.

If that doesn't work, the router is probably toast. Time for a new one.

Router Configuration in "Wireless Client" Mode

Hi, If I understand you right, what you want to do is to make the DI-524 as a repeater, i.e. receive from the "external wireless access point" and re-broadcast to your "small home wireless LAN". Unfortunately, no. D-Link made it a point not to enable repeater mode in the DI-524 model (firmware has no support for wireless distribution service). Other than your old DWL-900AP+, one other model they have that can do this is the DWL-G710 but only in WiFi and not in the Ethernet port. On some other brands of similar feature models, the original manufacturer's firmware may be replaced with an open source firmware with more features enabled. An example is the LinkSys' WRT54G and the replacement firmwares by Sveasoft and another named DD-WRT. Hope this be of some information to you. Post back should you require additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
