My Gateway computer is extreamly slow. Could the processor be the problem?

A slow computer could be caused by a number of things - 1. Insufficient RAM (memory) - if your computer has less than 512Mb of RAM then increase it to at least 1Gb of RAM. 2. Registry problems - clean and repair the registry, it will contain unused registry keys. Use programs such as Registry Mechanic, Microsoft RegClean etc. 3. Uninstall/remove unused programs, this will also free up hard disk space. 4. Not enough hard disk space - swap file space may need to be increased if Windows hasn't been configured to manage it. 5. Install latest Windows updates. 6. Update virus definition files and scan computer for viruses, Trojans, malware etc. 7. Clear the Internet cache for faster browsing. 8. Hard disk maintenance is required at least once a month to keep it functioning efficiently. Run the following programs - Disk Cleanup - removes temporary files that are no longer used and to recovers hard disk space. Disk Defragmenter to make fragmented files into contiguous files and therefore the hard disk access is faster.

How To Clean Up Your Computer

Everything in life needs maintenance, and your computer is no different. Everything you do and see on your computer takes up space. Over time, heavy use can start to weigh it down and make your pc run slow. What can you do when your computer becomes cluttered and slow? That's easy! You can clean it up and reorganize the stored files for optimal performance.

The first thing to do to clean up your pc is to run "disk cleanup". Disk cleanup is a program that deletes clutter and creates more useable memory. If you are using Windows Xp, you can find disk clean up by clicking on "start", then "programs" and "accessories". Then slide over to "system tools" and click on "disk cleanup".

After clicking on disk cleanup, your computer will display a message that says it is calculating how much space can be recovered on your "C" drive. When it is finished, you will see a screen that shows choices of files in which to purge on the left and the "ok" button on the bottom. Click on every box that is available and choose ok to begin cleaning your disk.

This process can take a while, depending on how long it has been since the last time you cleaned your computer. When its finished, the program will have removed all unnecessary files to free more memory space. But we are not done yet! There is still one more program to run the complete the process and leave your computer running at its best. That program is called "disk defragmentor" and its found in the same place as disk cleanup.

To run disk defragmentor, click on "start", "programs" find "accessories" and then choose "system tools". Click on disk defragmentor and a window will open asking which drive you wish to defragmentate. Choose your "C" drive and then click "ok" or "defrag" at the bottom.

Disk defragmentor reorganizes files to bring all of your free space to the front of the drive where it is needed most.

Running both of these programs once every couple of weeks will keep your computer at its best.

My computers are extremely slow

HARD DISK MAINTENANCE TO KEEP COMPUTER RUNNING EFFICIENTLY.
Hard disk maintenance should be carried once a month to make your computer run efficiently. This removes redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up hard disk access. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time.

When a computer takes time to start what do you think is the problem.

Uninstall (not simply delete) all unused applications. These programs take up space on the hard drive and reduce the area for temporary files and load the Windows registry with dozens or even hundreds of file that need to be loaded at boot time. Both of these situations can drastically slow a computer down during boot and while running.

Perform some disk "housekeeping". Run Cleanup to remove old temporary and orphaned files, cookies, etc. Read the directions carefully before using.

Run the Windows Disk Defragment Program. It is a tool for each hard drive. This program consolidates data and free space so that the disk has large, unbroken blocks of unused space to write temporary files - and makes reading data easier as it can be found in one place - instead of having to hunt all over the disk to find it.

Remove existing and prevent future "****" from collecting by using Ccleaner aka "**** cleaner". When run and set up correctly, it will remove and prevent accumulation of junk files and spamware. Again, read directions carefully and allow updates to the program for maximum protection.

Lastly, install a good Anti-Virus program. Norton stuff is very good, BUT can slow a machine down considerably. Other choices are Avast (free "Home" version available) or Viper for about $30. Both are very good to excellent and have minimal impact on the computer speed.

Doing these few items should help a great deal - please rate this reply and good luck!
