Clean the burner with a wire brush and vacuum the ceramic. Blow out the heater, remove dust, cobwebs, and lint from it.

Heater will not ignite

  1. Do you have a standing pilot style heater = Milivolt
  2. or is it an IID = Spark style ignitor
  3. Or... Hot surface Ignitor = glows red hot like an auto cigarette lighter?

Most common problem I have come across over the last few weeks, is pressure switch not closing, meaning - dirty filter. Try cleaning your filter: backwash or rinse cartridges.

  1. is pilot staying on, and burning well?
    1. If so, is htr's gas valve in ON position?
  2. Do you hear sparking?
    1. If No, then one of the safety switches is keeping heater from firing...
      1. Toggle switch - on/off
      2. Thermostat - turned up high?
      3. Pressure switch - closes circuit when pump comes on
      4. 2 each high limits
      5. Fusible link / roll out switch
    2. If yes, either gas valve is off, is bad or the Ignition module is bad? Some call it grey box.
      1. You will need to test for voltage at the common and MV posts of the gas valve - 24 to 28 volts. If voltage = bad gas valve; if no voltage = bad IID Module (Intermittent Ignition Device)
  3. Do you see a bright red glow in the burner tray area?
    1. If yes, either fuel supply is off, or Ignitor has worn out and the glow is not hot enough to ignite raw fuel.
    2. If no, check voltage at Ignitor - depends on make and model of heater- could be as low as 24 volts and as much as 110 volts. So... No voltage at the supply wires = bad sending component, again depend on brand and model, could be ignition module, could be circuit board?
    3. If yes voltage, bad Ignitor
      1. Again, this is if fuel supply is confirmed.
Good Luck

I've got a 23 yr old 30DV3 whose pilot light works, and the thermostat & heating element seem to work, but not well. With the thermostat set at full hot, it just barely throws out any heat at all. ...

As I'm sure you already know, Empire Comforts Systems, no longer makes that model heater and hasn't for some years, now. I mentioned that, because if your unit needs parts, they may be almost impossible to get. In any event, there are a several things that may be causing the problem.

  • Low Gas Pressure - Burner is not receiving enough gas. Check for obstructions and have gas pressure at the unit checked.
  • Clogged burner or air intake (venturi valve) is partially clogged. Clean burner ports and venturi valve.
  • Gas line Shut Off Valve at heater not fully open. Check Gas line Shut Off Valve.
At 23 years old, you've gotten your money's worth out of this unit and it may be time to replace it. Empire makes several Direct Vent Wall Furnaces that are rated as High Efficiency Furnaces. In the long run, the money saved in fuel cost, would be worth installing a new one.

Hope this helps you solve the problem.

If your furnace uses an electrical glow element to light the pilot light, the Glow Element will need to be replaced. Glow Elements are general used on 90+ High Efficiency Gas Furnaces.

If it uses a standing pilot light rather than the Electrical Glow Element, you need to manually relight the pilot. Since I can't see your furnace, you will need to locate and read your Owners Manual on how to do this or look in the side or inside the pilot light compartment for instructions on how to light it.
Be sure you have stick match or a butane grill lighter with you before you try to light it.

If it's a manual pilot ... if after lighting it, it doesn't hold when turned to the ON position, more thank likely you'll need to have the Thermocouple replaced.

And above all, BE CAREFUL. If you don't feel comfortable lighting a gas furnace, call a professional.

Pilot won't light

You may have to bleed some more air out of the system.

Your ODS pilot may be clogged with dust or lint and needs to be blown out with air(less than 30 psi).

Your regulator or gas valve may be faulty.

The pilot on my Comfort Glow Gas Logs CLD3924PTA won't stay lit. Can anyone help me with this problem??? Thanks

You must have some kind of flame sensor and it sounds as though it is not working correctly. If the pilot lights and then goes off, I would look there first. Good luck...Lee

If you have a pilot, you have a thermocouple. I would start with the thermocouple. The thermocouple is supposed to be heated by the piolet and to keep the pilot gas on. If it is faulty, the pilot will quit and the heater will not reignite until you light it again. Good luck...Lee

the pilot light is operated off a millivolt generator. that is the small tube directly in the pilot flame. its purpose is to generate a small dc current which is connected to the pilot valve inside the main valve. setting the control to pilot opens just the pilot gas supply. when operating normally the millivolt generator keeps a small electromagnet pulled in that keeps the pilot gas supply open. if it don't work the pilot gas supply valve closes. replace the thermocouple.
